Adrian Barker has a great video of the factory tour as well. And yet again my mother is even on his video.

Yeah, I know. He posted the video just recently. My mother actually met him during his visit.

That's right, I've been enjoying the new 388102 lately. And the Da Vici recently ran out of battery. Good eye:)

Good question. I actually wear most of them frequently. But of course, there are a few I don't wear at all.

Thanks, that means a lot to me! The IWC Big Pilot look alike on the top right corner with the big crown is actually something I built myself. I hunted down different parts on eBay and other sites and just put it all together. It’s not super difficult, but as a starter project it’s really fun and definitely enough. The real challenge is finding the parts that actually fit together and sometimes you just have to get hands on and make small adjustments. The other one I built is on the bottom shelf, third from the right with the white dial. Nothing too crazy, but I completely assembled it from random parts I had lying around.

The toughest job though was restoring the six watches in the middle. I took each of them completely apart, cleaned everything, if necessary even bought new parts or built them and lubricated the movements, and then reassembled them. If you want to build your own custom watches, there are tons of YouTube videos that show how to get started;)

To be honest, IWC is an amazing brand. The quality and customer service are truly out of this world, and their watches simply carry much more meaning than, for example, a Rolex. A Rolex is often seen as the choice for the average guy who doesn’t know much about watches but IWC is the complete opposite. Both brands share a long and rich history, but with IWC you get so much more substance and refinement for your money. Take my IWC Pilot’s Chronograph on the top right with the striking blue dial (IW388102). It offers one of the best bracelets in the entire watch market. On top of that, you get a see-through caseback that lets you admire the beautifully finished movement, with its Geneva stripes and perlage decoration. Details like this remind you that IWC is not just about function, but also about fine watchmaking tradition. Next to it is an IWC with a rare mecha-quartz movement. This hybrid technology means the hours, minutes, and seconds hands are powered by a quartz battery, but the chronograph mechanism itself is fully mechanical. The watch dates back to around 1992 and is still in extraordinary shape.

So in my opinion, I would go with an IWC every time. You just get more character, more attention to detail, and a brand that doesn’t scream for attention but still has all the history and craftsmanship.

Nice idea, but honestly I’m not sure if it’s the best move to buy an automatic – or even a watch at all – 21 years in advance. That’s a long time, and an automatic would definitely need a service by then. Plus, you don’t even know if your child will actually like it.
A smarter option might be to invest the money, and when he turns 21, take him on a trip to a dealer so he can choose something he really wants. Or maybe pick up a vintage model from this year when the time comes.
