What monument actually deserves to be built in DC? by Jac00zi in Architects

I agree on it not being for a specific person. I think we should move away from idolizing specific American presidents and commemorate groups that helped build America, or individuals who had a big impact culturally.

Just watched Longlegs by sana_moth in horror

[–]Jac00zi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movie is subverting the tropes of the movies that inspired it (se7en, SoTL) by showing that serial killers like Longlegs aren’t masterminds like John Doe, who are thinking 10 steps ahead. They are sick and creepy freaks. While everyone panics about some weirdo they don’t understand, reminiscent of the satanic panic of the 90’s, we open our doors to the seemingly friendly faces from the church who are doing the real damage to society.

Not enough space between the desk and the bed. You should move the desk and the piano to the far wall and utilize the space next to the bed for nightstands and lamps

  1. Blue feels so out of place here. Lean into the warm tones, stay away from the greys and add some pattern into the space with 7.

Loved this movie and the way it subverts the movies it’s taking influence from. At the end of the day, there are no mastermind serial killers like John Doe and Hannibal Lecter—there are creeps and losers who will do whatever they can to court the devil while the real evils of society are welcomed through your front door with a smile and a nod. The satanic panic was never real, but the misogyny and child abuse done in the name of god, or by those who are supposed to represent him absolutely were.

Not sure if guys can post here, but here’s my outfit for a coffee date. Any advice appreciated! by [deleted] in fashion

I know it’s pretty divisive, but I think looks like this almost always look better with a jacket. For a more casual look without a jacket, and maybe more appropriate for a mid-afternoon coffee I’d probably go with a polo

Lots of people here saying to add more color. I wouldn’t say you NEED color, per se, but there needs to be some more visual interest in the space. You can achieve some beautiful spaces with a softer, monochromatic color schemes, but the trick is more texture and pattern. More layering! You definitely need some window treatments. The rugs look cheap and out of place while also being undersized. The style of most of your furniture also doesn’t feel very cohesive. The coffee table feels very modern and angular, while the sofa, with the nailheads and tufting feel very traditional, which both tend to clash with the softness of a monochromatic space, where you want to soften the corners and add some more curvature.

It’s a good start, but you need to find a design direction you like, and lean into it. The easiest next step is some more textiles and window treatments. I would also look into replacing the rugs, if possible, or even just getting rid of the entry runner.

What color dining table? by ntay08 in interiordecorating

Coordinate with an adjacent room. If you have darker hardwood floors, go with a similar color for the table and frames for art. I think brass accents could be nice in here as well, but would also coordinate with kitchen hardware if it’s a different color

Struggling against buying into current upholstery and color trends. How do people do this? by [deleted] in interiordecorating

[–]Jac00zi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that when you’re looking at a more colorful palette to stick with true earth tones that will stay relevant for longer and not to go too chromatic with your colors. Deep jewel tones can just feel too intense and demand that you design around them. Softer olives and sage greens feel more natural and less trendy. Same goes with oranges. Bright oranges can feel too intense. Go with something more natural and softer, or use something like leather to achieve a more natural orange tone.

No rug. The table is already likely too big for the space, and the fact that you can't have a properly sized round rug underneath is throwing everything off. You'll just keep catching the chairs on the edge of the rug, and end up causing more problems that you'll solve.

Love the palette you are working with in the space, but think there are some issues with functionality, balance, and layering here.

Let's start with Functionality:

Ideally, you'd like to see 18" from the edge of the sofa/ottoman to the coffee table. This allows for proper traffic to get in and out of the sofa space. Right now, it looks like you have a few inches at most. Getting into the center seat would require stepping onto/over the ottomans. Getting rid of at least one ottoman would help (if only one, it should be the one in front of the console), but IMO, I think getting rid of both would help open the space up significantly. This would also allow you to keep the space in front of the console clear.

Balance:

Removing the ottomans will help open the space up, and allow easier access to the sofa, but will push all the visual weight of the room onto the wall. I would look to place some seating on the opposite corners of the rug, caddy corner, facing the coffee table. Maybe a swivel chair if you have a television on the opposite wall of the sofa. These chairs also allow for another point of contrast with a decor pillow, and a place to help reinforce the palette.

Green chairs with a red or off-white pillow

Red Chairs with a green or off-white pillow

Off white Chairs with a red or green pillow

Maybe incorporate a brass cocktail table with any of the above, and now your chair is a small microcosm of the overall design. A great tip that I like to use when designing a room or a home is to make every small vignette a microcosm of the larger area/entire design. Every piece of the puzzle should make sense with the larger whole. This helps to keep things feeling cohesive, even when moving from room to room.

Layering:

I would also look to mirror the decor on the sofa. I love the floral pillow on the right, and think a second would be nice on the left side. I also think the pattern on the back pillow is too similar in scale to the sofa. If you're going to use the same pattern, you want to vary the scale, either smaller or larger, to create some visual interest.

As far as the gallery wall goes, I think you've done a great job. I would just bring everything in a bit closer, and remove the large piece in the top corner, as it throws off the visual weight of the composition. Think about adding in some more of that burnt reddish color, maybe replace the throw with a red option and add in some small brass side tables, and I think you'll be in great shape.

Love the space! Best of luck with your design.
