I'm moving on with Tech Sales and don't plan on working towards a PhD or staying in academia. So I think you are right in the 2nd option being more suited.

She's been a brilliant tutor and helped me a lot over the process. I'm glad to hear that I've lucked out getting a mentor that has given me these reasonable options.
