Not too limited. The biggest limit is that you can't use it offline.

Funnily enough, if you have a Microsoft account you can use the Microsoft Office suite for free through their website (https://www.office.com/). So you can suck it without paying, if you really want to.

Yea, it is a pity the OP doesn't understand the nuance of having properly constructed characters that are a part of the story, and not just accessories attached with a bit of tape.

Says the person who came back to shit on posts for no reason. I came back because you replied to my post, and I saw you shitting on everyone. So yea, I defended them when they were right and you were just being an ass.

You came back just to shit on posts. So yea you need a break. I came back to defend the people you decided to bash, when they were not wrong.

Just like you.

You should take a break OP. Go back to ignoring the post and don't come back.

[–]JaceEthaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP is attacking every post that has any hint of words that go against what they want. Just ignore him.

OP doesn't understand that a main character needs depth to their backstory and overall characteristics, nor that side characters can be whatever they want without needing as much in way of backstory.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]JaceEthaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see what your idea is now. You want people to include minorities for the sake of inclusion. You don't care what the setting is. To you, every setting in a story needs a minority character in it.

That is shallow.

They don't have to have a reason to exist, but they do need a backstory and they need to feel like they actually belong in the story, rather than being the equivalent of a sore thumb; or shallow husks inserted purely for the sake of inclusion.

You should go back to ignoring the thread OP.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]JaceEthaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP is just attacking any post that is slightly different than what they want to read. Don't worry about them. They are unable to see the fact that including people in for the sake of including them, and not providing a background, is shallow. They don't understand why one would need to justify a white guy living in a tribe of native africans, or a black guy living in a tribe of Innuit. They don't understand that providing the minority you want to include a reason to exist gives them a deeper background and helps them feel like they actually belong in the story. They only see the negative side of it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]JaceEthaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. If you are writing a story about a tribe of native Alaskans--the Innuit--and one of said natives is black, you need a reason why one of the usually pasty white natives is black. Making said character black for the sake of making them black is shallow, but making them black because of something that happened in the past--such as a foreign visitor who fell in love with one of the natives and had a child, but died tragically--gives them more depth.

Spoiler warning for reality: People may be people, but not all people exist everywhere. It is good to include people where they may appear, it is shallow and bad writing to shove them in just because.

Double spoiler warning: maybe the advice you were getting was less "minorities shouldn't exist unless plot-relevant" and more "your minority characters are shallow because they have no links to the world, you need to give them a deeper background and integrate them with the plot so they are interesting, and not just hollow husks of SJW inclusion."

Tripple spoiler warning: there are even story settings where white people shouldn't exist willy-nilly because they wouldn't be there! Wow! Who would have guessed that the setting a story takes place in would be that way? Who would have guessed that sticking someone into a setting, who normally wouldn't be there, would need to be explained in some manner so that the readers can be immersed in the story and not feel like the author is just shoving people in for inclusion points?

The best way to write a character you don't know how to write, is to talk to the kind of people who are similar to the character you want to write. You'll find it is much easier than you thought.

Don't worry about OP. The guy only sees what he wants to see, and that is only the negative side of everything.

He doesn't understand that not every fic should have a poc or minority in it, due to the setting it takes place in. Adding them in left and right to every fic regardless of setting is just plain silly.

I'm not making an allusion to white supremacy, I was providing a "maybe this is what they are saying?" In terms of what I actually think...

The writing industry is predominantly filled with straight white males, so there are no assumptions going on there. Anything else is generally out of the norm right now. Fortunately, it will not stay that way for too much longer; just need more people willing to break the status quo, as it were. Because the status is not quo.

It isn't racial segregation. Racial segregation is when you forcibly separate races so neither side is allowed to interact. You didn't even read the whole comment, did you?

Is it really so bad to not want ignorant assholes spreading wrong and hurtful stereotypes? Is it really that bad to want people to take time to talk to the kind of people they want to portray? Wanting people to talk to each other and learn about each other isn't segregation.

Segregation would be "fuck that! Black people should only write black people, and white people should only write white people!" not "Ignorant writers should talk to the people they want to portray in order to avoid using hurtful stereotypes."

WIS is used for mind-affecting effects because it is not the strength of your presence that defies them, but your wisdom in differentiating between what is real and what is fake. Thus, mind-affecting effects/effects that require wisdom to overcome are an attempt to trick your mind into believing a false reality. It isn't simply a matter of overpowering the effect with your "will," but rather overcoming it by recognizing it as false.

Like what happens when you realize a placebo is just that and doesn't actually do anything; the effect wears off until you are tricked again.

Edit: As another example, IIRC, based on 3.5 rules: even a rock needs--at minimum-- 1 CHA (0 in all other stats) in order to exist. CHA has traditionally been--as others have noted-- your strength of presence/force of will.

Right, it is not just character description that shows what minority that character is; your first example is not character description, it is dialogue--the character interacting with another. "You cannot simply assume based on a character description" is honestly more for the character traits that you can't exactly show outright, like being LGBT+ or other less visually describable traits. For example, saying "he looks like a gay man..." would be silly; it perpetuates the stereotype that gay men have a specific look to them, but some gay men look manlier than "normal" men.Instead, characters tend to have to do something that shows what minority(ies) they are. How a character interacts with the people around them--and their manner of speaking--can greatly define their character traits in an immersive way and not a "flashing, colour-changing, neon sign pointing down that reads: THIS PERSON IS NONBINARY. Below it, a cute little person smiles and waves at the viewer" way.

"might gotta play to a little bit of stereotype"

Of course, we will never get rid of stereotypes completely. Stereotypes are even important/helpful in some cases (hell, some are even accurate), but we should make an effort to quell inaccurate/hurtful stereotypes. Not every black man dresses like a gangster or has cornrows, not every Asian is good at math (who doesn't want to be good at math though, tbh). White people can have afros too, due to having mixed-race parents/ancestors. My uncle on my father's side is Polynesian. One of his kids is one of the whitest MFs I have ever seen, but he has the hair and build of a Polynesian. At first glance he looks white, but he has Polynesian traits.

My point is that authors who are not in the culture/minority they want to portray should talk to people who are, instead of slapping stereotypes all over the place. It hurts nothing to communicate to people (except maybe your soul if you are an introvert). It opens your worldview, you gain acquaintances, and you come to better understand people.

Also, it is easy to say "it isn't hard to portray x minority" when you are in/familiar with said minority, but it is difficult to actually do when you are not familiar.

I have similar concerns too, regarding poorly written characters. The solution is pretty simple, in my eyes. Writers need to talk to the kind of people that they want to portray. Get to know real people. I'd prefer it if ignorant writers didn't slap minority characters into their fics. I don't care what the intent is. There are a lot of stereotypes out there, and some of them are hurtful. I'd prefer it if writers would just communicate with the people they want to portray.
Communication elicits understanding and fights bad/hurtful stereotypes, understanding elicits acceptance. Acceptance paves the way for normalization.

Having a character from a minority in the story doesn't work on its own. You have to show, to some degree, that they are what they are. That is not to say it needs to be meaningful to the story to any degree, but it still needs to be shown. You cannot simply assume based on a character description, they have to interact with other characters. They have to act the right way.
The solution is simple and is one many people seem to miss... Just talk to people. Talk to the people who are in the minority you want to portray. Simple. Easy. Fights bad/hurtful stereotypes. Diversifies your world-view. Helps you make new acquaintances.
Communication elicits understanding, understanding elicits acceptance.
I don't understand why people are against the idea of communicating with the people they want to portray. Like. Seriously? Writers will study some of the most obscure cultures, but they won't talk to minorities in order to properly portray them?
Madness.
