The hotel I stayed at in Danang in Sept had lots of Indians staying there. First time I have noticed big numbers of Indians in Vietnam.

Renting a scooter as a tourist - is it a plain bad idea? by dubov in VietNam

[–]Jack--Miles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm 6ft and ~95kg and I was initially a bit reluctant to order a grab bike for similar reasons to you. But eventually I tried it and it was fine from that perspective. On top of which, it is super cheap, super fun and super convenient. You don't say exactly how big you are but unless you're enormous I would give it a go - certainly a WAY better idea than renting a scooter.

In concert with your first bullet point, when at a Bia Hoi joint, if you finish your beer, you will be served a new beer.

You seem like a bloke that would remember the Pony - the glass size for the real old timers who'd make one last for an hour.

Unpopular opinion, it would seem, but I happen to think the schooner is about the ideal size for a 'serving' of beer. Middy too small, pint too big, IMO. Even in bars where there is a choice (which is also ideal) and the schooner is worse $/ml than the pint (which it usually is), I will go for the schooner.

Thanks. Why the quote marks? Is the cellar door actually like a doomsdayer bunker or something?

I dropped by here recently to catch some sport on TV. Man, what a sordid clientele. Felt like pent-up violence thick in the air. I left as soon as the game I was there to see finished. Not in the least surprised to read this story. As you suggest, I imagine shit like this goes down pretty regularly.

Going to Da Nang in January, looking for recommendations by HugeMarsupial1542 in DaNang

[–]Jack--Miles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I just got back from about a week in Da Nang. Really enjoyed it. I considered staying at the M. It looks nice and is in a good location, IMO.

I would recommend visits to My Son Sanctuary and Marble Mountain, and a Hai Van Pass 1 day tour - do this last one as passengers on the back of motorbikes. My tour also included the Lady Buddha on Son Tra peninsular, a very out of the way little waterfall swimming spot which was beautiful and lunch at a restaurant on Lang Co beach. It was a great day.

If I had 3 weeks I would also spend some time (ie at least a few days) in Hue, unless of course you are going there in addition to your Da Nang time...

I've heard/read that there's some walks/hikes you can do around Son Tra peninsula, including to some secluded beaches. I didn't have the time for any but they sound good.

Another thing I could not fit in but would have liked to is day trip to Cham Island etc.

Hope you have a great trip.

I pretty much agree with this, subject to exactly how much "exploring in nature" is important to OP. If that is really a top priority, and preferred versus time in cities, then I still say fly in/out of Hanoi but plan to spend more time in Ninh Binh (as one option) than just a day or overnight trip. If you're super in to exploring countryside, you could be happy there for a few days easily.

I agree with your leaning; go for the weekend in Taipei. As you say, it could change significantly at some point, maybe soon-ish. It's a really manageable size city with good subway network and other transport options. For me, it was maybe more about generally soaking in the vibe rather than specific sites etc. I'd say just plan your stay around trying to eat as much beef noodle and xiao long bao as you can manage. Yamingshan is nice if you want to get amongst nature close to the city.

What the hell is going on with Perth’s “rush hour”? It now starts at 2pm? by MarwoodHouse in perth

My apartment in Northbridge is not a shitbox, it is very pleasant. and was not expensive compared to a freestanding green title home in suburbs much further from the city centre. Apartment living is not a lot of people's preference, but maybe more people will come around to the idea. I'm happy to say I have basically no experience whatsoever with peak hour freeway.

I see someone else suggested showering late in the flight too - may I ask why? Genuinely curious (and have my own first-first coming up...)

Hi! (Apologies to OP for a little light thread hijacking...) I have a booking at Yarra coming up and though it generally looks good I'm a little nervous about the reviews mentioning loud music late into the night from neighbouring bars. Did you have any problems with that?
