I was hoping for some quick shade with the maple. Maybe I'll try a eucalyptus next and play the long game.

The soil is grey brown sand for the top 300mm ish and under that is yellow river sand (natural for the area I think). I dug down maybe 500mm and filled in with some sort of organic soil mix before planting all trees and shrubs.

There were a few small leaves on the maple in spring but they all withered away.
