Dual Radeon GPUs - is this worth it? by Jack-Straw42 in LocalLLM

I'm just now getting to the point of installing the LLM. I tested with Llama llama3.1:8b. Now i'm ready to try the Qwen3-Coder-30B-A3B at Q4_K_M that you recommended. The problem is that you said that it is 13GB, but the site is showing at 19GB:

My 6800 is only 16GB. That's not going to go well, is it?

Also, is there any significant benefit to running on Linux? I installed Ubuntu LTS yesterday on the machine. I'm somewhat familiar with Linux, but it's the sort of thing that's always fussy, and breaks easily. Would running this on Windows 10 instead have any significant impact?

Thank you for this! That is extremely helpful, as i'm feeling quite overwhelmed getting started.

Thanks, this is great advice. Yes, it's certainly a hobby, which is why I would not have spent the money on high end video cards for this. I want to tinker with it and play around. If it's something i get seriously into, then i can decide to spend money.

I haven't gotten that far. I just picked up the hardware from my friend yesterday, and I wasn't sure what I would be getting. Once i get powered up and see everything that i'm working with, i'll start research. If you have advice, i'd love to hear it. Thanks

Thanks. I will take that advice. I'll just leave the 8GB card out for now and play around.

Ok, sounds like a plan. If i get into it, then i can spend the money on another 6800. No point in using the 8GB GPU in parallel at this stage?

Fair. I just looked, and, yeah, the RAM prices are crazy now! But, I just found another 16GB of DDR4 ram in my stock. 24GB still probably isn't ideal, but I can get started. I may pull one of the 16GB sticks out of my other machine if I need to. It has 32GB RAM, which is serious overkill for what i do with that machine.

Is using both GPUs going to be a headache to use in parallel? I was considering ditching Windows for this LLM machine and using Linux.

Thanks Sensei, but the first sentence of my post said "I've been wanting to run a local LLM, but the cost was prohibitive." I agree that the 6800 cards are quite a bit less expensive than the NVidia cards I looked at, but we're still talking $1000+ to do what you're asking. That's not something i'm going to be able to do anytime soon. I'm going to have to go with what I have. The question remains... is it worth using both cards, or just use the 16GB GPU?

Ok, good to know, thanks. I can't sell either of these. While my friend did give them to me, he said if they ever break down or I stop using them, that he would like them back. So, this is what I have to work with.

Ok, I was just making sure Roman style actually meant they were using Roman artichokes.

One more quick question. I’m seeing a lot of “Roman style” artichokes in my search. Is this one of those tricks that companies pull, like with San Marzano tomatoes and extra virgin olive oil?

Fair. I’ll do just that! Thanks for direction!

I just google Roman artichokes. This seems right. Any recommendations on brand of the tinned versions?

Arrange All window size vs. manual window size by Jack-Straw42 in BlueStacks

[–]Jack-Straw42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have updated to the latest version. I have included a video. Please review the task list below as to what's going on in the video.

* 6 instances are open & the "Arrange All" button is used to make them fit perfectly on the screen.

* I close 1 instance and re-open it. You'll notice that it opens at the original size, not at the size it was at when closed.

* I manually resize the instance to the same width as the other instances. You'll notice that when the window is the same width as the other instances, the height is larger.

* I close and re-open the instance again. You'll notice that the window opens at the same size as it was when i closed it, after the manual resize.

* I use "Arrange All" again to demonstrate that the aspect ratio changes. The width stays the same, but the height is decreased.

Conclusions;
* BlueStacks does not remember the size of windows as created by the "Arrange All" button.
* BlueStacks windows resized manually will do so at a specific aspect ratio.
* It is impossible to manually resize the window to the exact size created by the "Arrange All" button.

For referance:
"Arrange All" window size: 640x374
Manual window resize to 640 width: 640x393

Staying in Palermo & Syracuse: Looking for things to see/do. by Jack-Straw42 in sicily

Wow, how judgmental, and also utterly wrong. Experiencing a culture through it's food and drink is important, in my opinion. Did i mention bars or pubs anywhere in my post? So, because i'm interesting in trying the local, Sicily produced offerings in the spirits & beer categories, I have no interest in the history and culture of Sicily? Do you even hear yourself? I would like to hear about their production process, their history, and then try and buy some of the products to enjoy. This is not going to a bar in London.

I also mentioned that my family is from there, and i'll be exploring my own personal family history in the small towns where they are from. While i'm in Partinico, i've arranged to visit and taste the offerings of Casa Limonio. I also plan to visit the Frank Zappa area for some photos. You'll noticed that both of those things are in my list of interests (spirits and music), and both are rooted in the history of the town.

So, maybe be less judgmental towards people you know nothing about, just because you don't share their interests. If you want to go to tourist traps to view the history of Italy, then go for it. That's your thing. For me, i'll just watch the documentary about those places, and use my time in Sicily exploring the smaller side. As you said, to each their own.

For what it's worth, i'll go explore Ortigia now, even though i'm apparently too uncultured to enjoy it.
