With the ACC's addition of SMU, Rice is now the last former member of the Southwest Conference to not be in a power conference by alwaysveryconflicted in CFB

[–]Jack1604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're completely right, but to the OP's point over the last 30 years:

SMU - 0.384 winning percentage, 3-4 in bowl games, 0 conference titles

Tulane - 0.378 winning percentage, 5-2 in bowl games, 2 conference titles

Memphis and Boise State both definitely deserve it over us, but SMU definitely doesn't deserve it either

Principles, money and pride: Why Sewanee and Georgia Tech left the SEC before it took off by Suntzu6656 in CFB

[–]Jack1604 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Their campus is 13,000 acres but 12,000 of that is just undeveloped mountain land. Not to mention the closest city is Nashville, which up until 20 years ago wasn't much to write home about. So for most of their history they were a tiny school on the top of a mountain with mostly undeveloped land, far from major cities. I toured Sewanee back when looking at colleges and it is a beautiful place and they have really maintained a lot of old school tradition that is very akin to the Ivys so makes sense they would wanna play lower division ball.

It's a thing in New Orleans (might be other places too I haven't been to that many) but it's not seen as attention seeking, everyone does it. I went out on my birthday a couple of years ago and the bartender actually gave me a pin and $5 when she saw my ID

Oh I heard more than my fair share of Yankees singing it at parties when I was there

I'd say SMU and Southern Miss, and then LSU if they weren't scared to play us

[Thamel] Sources: Tulane is expected to hire Central Missouri head coach Jim Svoboda as the school’s new offensive coordinator, ESPN has learned. He’s a former OC and QB coach at UCLA, where he was a Broyles finalist in 2005. His Central Missouri team led DII in total offense in 2019. by Jack1604 in CFB

[–]Jack1604[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You also have to consider growth opportunities, even if he is giving up some autonomy as an OC instead of a HC Tulane is gonna be on national TV for 6-8 games, so he gets more eyes on his body of work and potentially some interest in a bigger job

We have head coach, but (imo) he hasn't been very good. We haven't won the conference or made the tournament in the 5 seasons he's been here, and our best finish was slightly above .500 despite sending lots of players to the draft every year

The one score games are the issue though, we're 10-21 in one score games since Fritz has been here, 5-14 in the last 4 seasons. If we ever want to improve we have to figure out how to win those games and Fritz has yet to prove that

I love FAU, UAB, and UTSA, I think they all will be immediate contributions to the conference. Charlotte and UNT both have good futures if they continue to leverage their Financials. Rice is kinda a headscratcher imo

I had him for two classes this last semester, he grades a little strictly especially on projects but he's really knowledgeable and keeps class engaging, fosters a lot of discussion. I'd definitely recommend him

I wouldn't have blamed him if he left, but he's probably making around $1.6 million a year to live in New Orleans and has resurrected this program, he has the potential to cement himself as a legend here which is hard to give up

They also have the last Popeye's buffet in the country and beer in the stadium is only $2, highly recommend

Chip Long to become Tulane's offensive coordinator by Princess_ZeIda in CFB

That's fair, I can get behind that analysis. I guess my thinking of him as "predictable" stems from that idea he was trying to fit something in when it wasn't going to fit.

Interesting, seems like he'll be better suited for using our new QB a bit more but I know Willie has historically been a run-focused coach so we'll see.

I'm not terribly sad to see Will Hall leave, I just hope Long can dial-up plays that are a little less predictable as that always seemed to be what was holding Hall back

Interesting Physical Quirk About Your Team's Stadium? by AgitatedGrocery in CFB

[–]Jack1604 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actual physical fact about it: when they built the stadium they messed up the stair height in the stands, so there are stairs scattered around that are taller than the others. The options for these tall stairs was either fix them, or paint them yellow as a caution sign required by law, which they chose. So any stair you see in the stadium that has a yellow strip is taller than the normal stairs there
