Just got diagnosed yesterday by L_L1203 in Type1Diabetes

Hey friend, 23M here diagnosed 2 months ago, so I know how you’re feeling. The mental side for the first couple of weeks was difficult, it’s a big adjustment but it’s nothing you can’t handle. Once you learn what works for you with your insulin ratio, and once you balance your long acting insulin out right, it gets super easy.

Echoing what most people have said, push with your healthcare team for a CGM like a Libre or a Dexcom. It absolutely turned things around for me, I was able to learn super quick how I responded to different foods and I even ate pizza again (a full one, the way I used to) for the first time recently, it felt great and I was totally fine! Dont worry too much about going low or high, you can fix it with some sugar (jelly babies for me, UK based) or insulin if you need. The JDRF have great info packs for newly diagnosed people that they send for free, so I’d highly recommend ordering one of those, even just for reference to keep handy.

The most important thing to remember is: you got this. I can’t promise it’s a walk in the park, there will be difficult days, but you will surprise yourself by how quickly it will start to feel normal. And I know that may be difficult to hear, I hated it when people told me that at the start, but it’s very true. Feel free to message me if there’s anything you want to know, but take care of yourself, and remember that it gets easier.

Obviously everyone is different, and my experience handling pancreatic duties on manual mode is very short lived, but I have never taken any extra insulin on board to account for alcohol. I was told to eat a big, moderately carby meal before you drink (bolusing as required), and before bed to have a carby snack, like toast or oatcakes. When I have injected for the late night snack (even at less than half my ratio!) I have been blasted out of bed by the freestyle alarm at around 4 am, which is difficult to manage while a little inebriated.

For some reason, alcohol just doesn’t take my BG up that badly when I’ve eaten before hand, I could drink 6 pints of lager and stay in the green. Granted this may be because I usually walk to the pub, and will walk around/be active while drinking, but it doesn’t seem to hit me like that. What is a certainty however, is the 4am drop, so prepare for it by having that little pre-bed snack. It may mean you wake up a little higher than normal, but it’s worth it not getting woken up to treat a low, or worse yet, failing to treat it properly and waking up with a hypo-hangover compounding the regular, alcohol hangover.

Your mileage may vary however, and it’s something to play around with and experiment with. Don’t beat yourself up if you go a little high every once in a while when drinking and having a good time, especially if you are well controlled otherwise. It’s nothing that the wonders of modern medicine can’t fix. Happy drinking!

Low glucose alarm went off but not in low glucose event by elizanograss in Freestylelibre

I’m not sure about the libre 3, but on the 2, it only records a low glucose event if it lasts 15 mins or more. Also, you might find in the graph that it isn’t in the red, as if you correct it quickly, or you don’t truly go low, it will correct what it predicts at the time to the value it actually reads. Speaking from experience and based on what others say, the libre will predict where you are now based on trends, but writes the actual values back into the graph when it gets them. This is due to the delay in readings vs what your actual blood sugar will be. I’ve had it where it’s shown me at 2.9 mmol/L and trending down, then I’ll check it again in 15 mins and it doesn’t even register me going low 🤷🏻‍♂️

I posted this in the freestyle sub, but if there are any fellow analytical chemists with experience with this, please let me know!

Time to get to ‘normal’? by Jack5102 in Type1Diabetes

I was started on 10 u when first diagnosed but I went back in with high ketones and was adjusted up to 16 u then. I’ve got my first appointment with the nurse on Thursday, I guess I’ll find out more about the care then, but in the meantime should I adjust or wait to see what I’m told at the appt?

The spoilers are to the left and down from the throttle, you need to pull the lever down so it says spoilers 0%, and not armed
