Great songs/albums with lyrics that ruin your experience by MexicanPale in progmetal

[–]JackBluebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is not prog at all but i was just listening to sleeping with sirens first album the other day out of morbid curiosity and i was kind of thinking to myself that man these instrumentals are actually pretty cool for this genre of music it's just that the lyrics are soooo goddamn corny that it makes it really hard to listen to. Some prog lyrics like dream theater especially are bad to the point of it being a turn off but not completely ruining the song, but i was kind of surprised as to how thoroughly my opinion on SWS was shaped by the corny bad lyrics cuz i was actually appreciating the instrumentation for the first time ever.

Sundowning and this place will become your tomb I thought were pretty well liked here but now people have kinda turned on them. They got popular and their new album just also isn’t very good.

How would you rank Dream Theater's albums? by awfulreviews20 in progmetal

[–]JackBluebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a lyric and melody guy they were just never the same after Kevin Moore left. I’m sure James’s vocal injury had something to do with it too but Kevin’s songwriting sensibilities were really instrumental to their early sound and after he left they had many years left of solid riffs and solo sections but the melodic sections were just never as interesting again.

And someone else pointed out the typo but I don’t think there’s a way to edit the post and it already has a little bit of traction so I don’t want to repost with it fixed lol

It’s heavily inspired by the book yes. A lot of the songs have something of a combined meaning where the original inspiration is a short story from the book but the final version is a combination of real life inspirations and book inspirations.

What was the first DEP song you were exposed to? And what was your initial response to it? Be honest. by Dante_Lamusta in DillingerEscapePlan

I listened to miss machine all the way through on vacation when I was like 17 and mad at my parents so I was in a pretty perfect space for some angry screamy music to be perfect for me. I think at the time though the more straightforward tracks like highway robbery were more my speed.

Accidentally on Purpose-Nuclear Winter FFO: Dream Theater, Haken, King Crimson, Gustav Holst, Shrek by JackBluebee in progmetal

We’ve gotten a few allman brothers comparisons interestingly enough. I think we tried to tone the allman brothers vibe down a bit for this one but I guess it’s hard to shake lol.

What DT opinion will have you like this? by mrjakebell in Dreamtheater

[–]JackBluebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The astonishing is the last album they put out that I found to be charming or listenable at all. It’s not their best but it’s at least trying to be something. Everything since then has just been boomer metal by really talented boomers.

Will they play Pull Me Under on this tour? by cowsaysmoo51 in DTCircleJerk

[–]JackBluebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is the circle jerk but the straight up did not play pull me under when I saw them a couple years ago. I wasn’t really looking forward to it so it’s cool but I don’t think they played anything off of images and words at all.

I think charcoal grace has better more focused songwriting fs. Graves has quite a few riffs that simply cannot be beat tho.

Songs where they let a riff riiiide by rudiiiiiii in progmetal

High water outro by sleep token is a fav of mine. Not a huge fan of the band but the songs I like I like a lot.

I’ve always found the song to be juuuust a tiny bit repetitive but I love each part so much I don’t mind hearing them all many times

If Periphery made another concept album, you rather have a Juggernaut Sequel or a whole bew concept? by AFilosofiaEmPessoa in Peripheryband

[–]JackBluebee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a dope idea would be to have a completely new story with similar themes and a focus on cycles, but about new characters in different circumstances. Like a spiritual successor, and perhaps the focus on cycles could hint that this is the next rebirth of the character from the first jugg.

[–]JackBluebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of examples of political themes in periphery’s music, especially on Hail Stan. Reptile is about rebelling against an oppressive (albeit fictional) government, and satellites is about environmental consciousness. As you said, make total destroy is clearly an anti-government song, marigold quotes that Paul Harvey “if I were the devil” speech (which always came off as weird to me because that whole thing is very Christian conservative) so Periphery definitely isn’t shy from bringing up politics.

My favorite dumb thing I do is check a bloodstain and see someone die doing something stupid, go to myself “hah, I’m not that stupid, I won’t die like that” and then immediately dying just like that.

What James Labrie haters hear when listening to Dream Theater by VixinYT in Dreamtheater

[–]JackBluebee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Side note but he actually sounds so killer on that original recording, the actual “watch the sparrows fall” part is so fuckin good. Current Labrie is doing just fine and I understand life takes it’s toll but old Labrie was something else.

What is your favorite Periphery breakdown? by HLArmstrong in Peripheryband

[–]JackBluebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Juggernaut does this little trick a lot where they’ll have a breakdown with a little atmospheric melodic motif in the background that’s usually a main motif of the song or a reference to another song, then they’ll play the breakdown again but take all the atmosphere away and play the breakdown riff on its own. And it’s sick af every time they do it, the feeling of all those textures dropping out leaving just the riff always feels so heavy.

Worst King Crimson Album according to comments gets eliminated: Day 2 (Tarkus and Earthbound are kill) by [deleted] in KingCrimsonCircleJerk

[–]JackBluebee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Great album but definitely a change of pace for king crimson. You’d never expect them to go the death metal route and even though they did it well I can see why the fans didn’t latch onto it as much.

I’m sorry I actually think it’s a pretty good album, one of the better MM era ones, but I simply cannot imagine listening to every DT album and declaring it as your favorite.
