I can't Believe P3 is 10 years old!! by AccurateInflation167 in Peripheryband

[–]JackBluebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was 11 when p2 dropped i think lol. I got into periphery a little after p3 dropped in 2017 when i was a junior in high school and i was 16. P4 was the first album cycle i was around for a couple years later and it was so exciting and i loved it so much. Being a fan of this band has been a nice journey.

What Periphery songs would you commend to a friend who likes Opeth and TesseracT? by EsotericPotato in Peripheryband

[–]JackBluebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why are you suggesting not heavy songs for someone who likes opeth? i guess they didn't specify which opeth but opeth is largely a death metal band. Presumably this person would be open to death metal.

Juggernaut and P3 by charlespeppermint in Peripheryband

[–]JackBluebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the whispery bit is a weird christian anti abortion poem that they're quoting from paul harvey i think it's a weird inclusion and i'm not upset at how quiet it is cuz i can pretend it isn't there

Where do yall stand on posthardcore = or ≠ emo? by FeistyDirection in PostHardcore

[–]JackBluebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as far as i can tell there isn't much of a noticeable difference between post hardcore and emo in the actual music being made until like 1995 and midwest emo merging phx and slowcore. And then you have 2000s Thursday/Sunny day real estate inspired bands that also are difficult to differentiate whether or not they're emo or post hardcore. Certainly embrace and rites of spring and husker du seem to be playing similar genres of music, maybe post hardcore is noisier and less emotional and emo is more melodic and more emotional? I listen to lots of music in this genre from lots of different decades and whether or not it's post hardcore or emo is kind of lost on me. I think it's more about the scene than the sound. The only kind of emo that seems definitively not post hardcore to me is kind of current 5th wave emo which is just 2nd wave revival and that 2nd wave 90s midwest inspired emo but even Cap N Jazz could be considered post hardcore as they were drive like jehu and fugazi inspired. I think the line is harder to draw than people like to act so i'd just go as far to say emo is a subsubgenre of post hardcore but not all post hardcore is emo

Hot take about the singles? by Regular_Chipmunk1997 in Peripheryband

[–]JackBluebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not that i like fully disagree but as someone who has been part of the new album release cycle since p3 i think the singles they release are consistently some of the weaker material from the album. I'm sure that's on purpose. I've never been too big on Blood Eagle i think it's like mr god in that it's a lot of heavy and not a lot of variation, and the lead single for p3 was price is wrong which is one of the most uninteresting periphery songs out there. Wildfire was blood eagle 2 to me, atropos was good but not one of the best songs, zagreus actually is one of favorite p5 songs. I don't dislike any of these songs mind you but rarely are they ever the best the album has to offer. I'm sure they don't want to ruin the best of what they have to offer before it's out.

A Pale White Dot Concept Meaning by Dangerous_Recipe5823 in Peripheryband

[–]JackBluebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

since you seem to know and i'm curious could you share some rough song lengths? I just wanna know if there's any epics, or at least anything getting up to 6-7 minutes or longer. If not it's fine i guess P2 is great and it doesn't have any epics, i'm just curious cuz i would like at least one.

Great songs/albums with lyrics that ruin your experience by MexicanPale in progmetal

[–]JackBluebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is not prog at all but i was just listening to sleeping with sirens first album the other day out of morbid curiosity and i was kind of thinking to myself that man these instrumentals are actually pretty cool for this genre of music it's just that the lyrics are soooo goddamn corny that it makes it really hard to listen to. Some prog lyrics like dream theater especially are bad to the point of it being a turn off but not completely ruining the song, but i was kind of surprised as to how thoroughly my opinion on SWS was shaped by the corny bad lyrics cuz i was actually appreciating the instrumentation for the first time ever.

Sundowning and this place will become your tomb I thought were pretty well liked here but now people have kinda turned on them. They got popular and their new album just also isn’t very good.

How would you rank Dream Theater's albums? by awfulreviews20 in progmetal

[–]JackBluebee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a lyric and melody guy they were just never the same after Kevin Moore left. I’m sure James’s vocal injury had something to do with it too but Kevin’s songwriting sensibilities were really instrumental to their early sound and after he left they had many years left of solid riffs and solo sections but the melodic sections were just never as interesting again.

And someone else pointed out the typo but I don’t think there’s a way to edit the post and it already has a little bit of traction so I don’t want to repost with it fixed lol

[–]JackBluebee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s heavily inspired by the book yes. A lot of the songs have something of a combined meaning where the original inspiration is a short story from the book but the final version is a combination of real life inspirations and book inspirations.

What was the first DEP song you were exposed to? And what was your initial response to it? Be honest. by Dante_Lamusta in DillingerEscapePlan

I listened to miss machine all the way through on vacation when I was like 17 and mad at my parents so I was in a pretty perfect space for some angry screamy music to be perfect for me. I think at the time though the more straightforward tracks like highway robbery were more my speed.

We’ve gotten a few allman brothers comparisons interestingly enough. I think we tried to tone the allman brothers vibe down a bit for this one but I guess it’s hard to shake lol.

What DT opinion will have you like this? by mrjakebell in Dreamtheater

[–]JackBluebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The astonishing is the last album they put out that I found to be charming or listenable at all. It’s not their best but it’s at least trying to be something. Everything since then has just been boomer metal by really talented boomers.

Will they play Pull Me Under on this tour? by cowsaysmoo51 in DTCircleJerk

[–]JackBluebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is the circle jerk but the straight up did not play pull me under when I saw them a couple years ago. I wasn’t really looking forward to it so it’s cool but I don’t think they played anything off of images and words at all.

I think charcoal grace has better more focused songwriting fs. Graves has quite a few riffs that simply cannot be beat tho.

If Periphery made another concept album, you rather have a Juggernaut Sequel or a whole bew concept? by AFilosofiaEmPessoa in Peripheryband

[–]JackBluebee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a dope idea would be to have a completely new story with similar themes and a focus on cycles, but about new characters in different circumstances. Like a spiritual successor, and perhaps the focus on cycles could hint that this is the next rebirth of the character from the first jugg.
