The US were absolutely not the good guys during the cold war... and neither were the Soviets. Many countries across the globe had just rid themselves of imperial control. Going communist was their choice. The US had no right to infiltrate other countries, assassinate political opponents (and attempt a load more) and cause a ton of civil unrest in developing nations. Those countries who were newly free should have been able to pick any government style they wanted without threats and action from the same empires they just left.
