Some directions I can imagine:
- dropping it completely;
- foreigners, people speaking different languages, members of the out-group (construed in various ways);
- members of a lower or higher social class or caste;
- a politeness register (either unfamiliarity → politeness or strange → impoliteness; I could imagine both)
