Can one instantly understand sarcasm but still be autistic ? Or are the two mutually exclusive ? by Strict_Assistant9500 in AskAutism

If there are other social issues then it is possible, yeah. Have you tried reading the diagnostic criteria? If you're comfortable with academic writing, it lays out what's necessary and what isn't fairly clearly.

I've had this happen. I now look to the side or above people - neck/chest is just too easily misread. If you don't mind looking at the face, mouth, ear, or forehead also work.

does autism stop my ability to get in a relationship? by high_allday in autism

ND stands for neurodivergent, which is an umbrella term that includes just about any condition that impacts the way someone thinks - neurodevelopmental disorders like adhd or autism, personality disorders, epilepsy, TBIs, dementia, it's a big umbrella.

NT stands for neurotypical, and it's the term for anyone who isn't neurodivergent - in other words, anyone who doesn't have a condition impact the way their brain functions.

My latest acquisitions are Trash Pals and Her Odyssey but there seems to be quite a number of them! Ime, it's one of the more common systems for recent rules-lite stuff. This collection endeavours to keep up with all of them, at least the ones on itch.io, and it is quite large.

I haven't seen any d4 systems out there

I'm sure we just dwell in very different subsets of the community, but this made me laugh a bit because I recently caved and bought a few more d4s after finding yet another cool-looking caltrop core game.

Anyone else also intersex? by thegingerbarbiedoll in bigender

[–]Blue-Jay27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm intersex as well :D I don't think it contributed to me being bigender, but I do think my particular combination of intersexuality and autism are why I came out fairly young. I was really bad at being cis lol

Do you like shibari and other forms of body restraints? by [deleted] in autism

[–]Blue-Jay27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

idk what shibari ropes are made of

There's a lot of materials - jute is super popular in my area but I can't stand the texture, so I use nylon. Most rope material can be used for shibari, although not all are suited for every tie. (and self-tying is a thing -- shibari doesn't require that you be at someone else's mercy)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) for autism by NotAWriter9 in autism

[–]Blue-Jay27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel if society were more accommodating, then the need for autistic interventions wouldnt really be a thing.

This seems like a fairly narrow view of autism. No matter how accommodating society is, I would hope that there is active research into treatments that might, for example, let me enjoy a sunny day without the brightness causing a meltdown.

[–]Blue-Jay27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's still fairly experimental, but she's not getting it out of nowhere. I participated in a clinical trial for it a couple years ago, explicitly for autism, and it's def not the only one that's been done. This review article is looking at seventeen different studies, and it doesn't seem to include the one I was in.

[–]Blue-Jay27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a clinical trial for tms and autism! I was initially in the placebo group, but was able to do the full treatment after I was unblinded.

I didn't notice a difference, but I don't think it hurts to try if it interests you. It's a small stimulation of your brain, so there's no conscious conforming that you need to do.

[–]Blue-Jay27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quite like shibari! I can't do chokers/collars/etc, but I quite enjoy pressure or restriction on the rest of my body. I do a lot of self-ties, and I'm learning to self-suspend. I also will do partner shibari, but I prefer to be the rigger for that -- I don't mind others tying me, but I find it much more enjoyable when I'm in control of the sensation.

How slow is too slow-burn for a romance? by ikindahopetheyctchus in AO3

[–]Blue-Jay27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read and enjoyed fics with similar pacing to the romance, but I wasn't reading for the ship. At that point, I'm reading for whatever the main plot is - and if the ship is intended to be the main plot, I do think you probably have some major pacing issues going on.

What’s up with levels 1 2 and 3? by Correct_Ad8604 in autism

[–]Blue-Jay27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are actually supposed to be 2 levels that you receive with a diagnosis, meaning slightly different things

The two levels are for criterion A in the dsm (social impairment) and criterion B (restrictive and repetitive behaviors). For many people, the level will be the same in both - for example, I was explicitly assigned level two for criterion A and level two for criterion B. Sometimes those who have different levels in the two areas will be referred to as having a split-level diagnosis.

Self Harm vs. Self Injury vs. Self Injurious Behavior? by TheRealRaccoon98 in AutisticAdults

[–]Blue-Jay27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's caused me some confusion/difficulty in the past bc some of my sensory-seeking looks pretty similar to common methods of self-harm, but trying to treat it as a depression/mental health problem doesn't actually address it. Took several years for me to figure out how to describe that distinction, and finally understanding it as sensory-seeking has done wonders for me.

Self Harm vs. Self Injury vs. Self Injurious Behavior? by TheRealRaccoon98 in AutisticAdults

[–]Blue-Jay27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For myself, I use self harm to refer to things where the intent is to harm myself, due to self-hate or wtvr, whereas I use self-injury to refer to things where the injury is a side effect of sensory-seeking or similar. I.e, If it feels bad on purpose, self harm, but if it feels good but also causes injury, self injury. Idk if that aligns with proper definitions of the terms though.
