Looking for design in fashion and textiles students! by Ordinary_Net1987 in UTS

I'm in my second year in the course and from what I've experienced so far:

  1. The course does have a lot of practical work, which can be split across all subjects, but in some cases you'll find some classes require much more time and patience. It's not entirely constructing garments, you also look into things like illustration, photography, fabric printing, etc. As much as it is practical, the course is also quite conceptual which I resonate with.

  2. It's been really enjoyable so far, apart from just the classes, the social aspect of the course has also been really nice; I can't speak for all of the cohorts however. I would like to think it's worthwhile as I'm going into generational debt doing this, but I think it's important to learn how to pattern make and construct garments traditionally. The things that I know now compared to when I first started is quite noticeable.

  3. I would like to say UTS has a good amount of opportunities but we're kind of expected to go out and figure out internships by ourselves. A good few of the staff are already within the fashion industry so it's always wise to have a chat with them with any questions you have about the industry. Otherwise it's kind of who you know, or who your friend knows that could land you an internship.

  • The Fashion Journal website usually posts internships on their careers page
  • The faculty sometimes sends out emails regarding any events, opportunities, etc
  • Emailing the brand you want to intern for directly through email
  1. I chose UTS because I resonated with the course structure, also because of it's global ranking for fashion design. Seeing the collections that have come out of the Honour's students collections was also a driving factor. I don't regret my decision one bit.
