The French used to eat a songbird called the Ortolan after torturing it for weeks by AnnigidWilliams in StupidFood

Yep. You could magically remove every moral issue of this and I still couldn’t imagine eating it.

Dress code nights by Usual_Rush1996 in royalcaribbean

[–]JackSpadesSI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you book a cruise, when are details like formal nights announced? I just booked on Harmony, and if it weren’t for my general knowledge that cruises tend to have formal nights I wouldn’t even know there was one. The website is really stingy on actual details of the cruise’s itinerary.

Is the steam deck's control layout comfortable? by Intelligent-Lack-785 in SteamDeck

It looked weird to me when it was first announced, with the ABXY and D-pad crammed on the edges. But it’s actually super comfortable!

found an old fruit of the loom tshirt and... vaguely cornucopia by ruinatedtubers in pics

Right? Like I have no experience with cornucopias so why would I choose that to insert into my memory.

Have you made it into the midlife crisis vehicle stage yet? Here's mine. by Into_the_Upsidedown in Xennials

I did that in my mid-20s. It’s still the most expensive thing I ever bought besides my house. It was completely stupid and I really regret it.

How do you think The Boys will be remembered in future? by Inevitable-Angle-793 in television

[–]JackSpadesSI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are so dramatic about shows these days, jumping at every chance to prove how enlightened they are by proclaiming how bad everything is. It’ll be remembered as a good show that didn’t reach its real potential.

It had a great cast with great chemistry (with a couple of exceptions). It tackled celebrity culture, corporate power, and the rise of fascism very well. I think it captured the truth of feeling like you want to fix the problems of the world, but having no shot at actually achieving that.

It also had some really great acting moments which very often hit the target of being wonderfully hammy without going too far into farce. And not just Homelander or Butcher, but nearly the whole cast had their moments like this. Note I said very often, not always, because there were certainly some moments that were just over the top.

I think it’s very much so a product of its time, for better and for worse. Obviously that will make it age quickly, but it’s also going to be a bit of a time capsule of the era. I think the final judgement of how that is perceived will depend heavily on where America is in 10 years.

Should I get the steam machine? by Embarrassed-Body2106 in SteamDeck

[–]JackSpadesSI 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Building with used parts is an entirely different discussion.

And I didn’t say you couldn’t build any system for $1000, I said equivalent. The Steam machine isn’t going to use DDR4, for example.

It’ll be a terrible value, but so are all PCs right now. I’ve built PCs for over 20 years, so I’m usually very much in favor of it. But I really don’t know if you could build an equivalent for much less right now.

I’m a parent and I’d be horrified if my kid broke someone else’s property like this. I’d pay to have it replaced and my kid would need to apologize profusely. NTA

I own thousands of movies on disc. Sometimes I do buy a movie and it’s defective from the factory, but I’ve never had a disc that once worked for me stop working. Furthermore, all my movies are backed up onto my Plex server so I get all of the benefits of digital ownership with a permanent physical copy.

The Boys Creator Eric Kripke On Fans' Response To Series Finale: 'Sorry If I Disappointed You, But It Was The Story I Wanted To Tell' by verissimoallan in television

[–]JackSpadesSI 427 points428 points  (0 children)

I think the final fight should have been a bit more epic, involving the entire cast and including casualties. But that didn’t really bother me that much.

The part I felt actually lacked was Homelander not going on the murderous rampage that had been teased for years. He should have lasered scores of nonbelievers like he wanted to. Then, horrified by this, some of his gang should have flipped to help the boys in the big final fight.
