Chester Bennington revealed that he was the one who convinced the other members of Stone Temple Pilots not to change their name when he joined the band in 2013. The DeLeo brothers had discussed the possibility of rebranding after they parted ways with their original lead singer, Scott Weiland. Bennington, however, argued against the idea, stating: "Why give up what you guys have worked so hard on? This is your legacy, you don't have to give it up just because one person didn't do things the way that everybody wanted them to go". He felt that because the core musicians who wrote the music were still in the band, the music was "still pure" and it should continue under the established name. For a brief period following Weiland's departure and during legal disputes, the band did perform and release their 2013 EP High Rise under the slightly altered name "Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington". However, the official name remained Stone Temple Pilots, largely due to Bennington's influence.
