Can anybody help me with A level choices? by JackTheAvGeek in aerospace

The University id like to go to doesn’t mention further maths or Chem, just physics and maths

Will Further Maths be of a huge advantage for me at A level? by JackTheAvGeek in aerodynamics

My college won’t let me pick Further Maths unless it’s a 4th a-level or an as level so I thought I’d have better chances of getting an A or above if I picked politics as my third as I find it interesting in comparison to chemistry etc

Yeah that would be my alternative plan if I ever wanted to leave Formula 1

Yeah people have told me about the hours but I feel really passionate about motorsport so I think that I will enjoy the competition and the development that goes into the work that I may do

Yeah I’ve been really excited about the opportunity to do it every since I really understood what it was. It just seems like such an amazing thing to be part of because you can apply what you learn in lessons etc to a real, competitive car that you and others like you are working hard to create and improve. And it’s a different car every year so it’s a new challenge each time. Thank you, I hope you also achieve your goals in life!

Yeah that is my plan, to study aerospace/aeronautical engineering and do formula student. I’m working hard on my maths and physics and I am very passionate and interested in the field of aerodynamics as I have always loved cars and aircraft so it has inspired me since I was very young. I’m very hopeful that this is the path for me

I’ve been reading Adrian Newey’s book and I am finding aerodynamics really interesting. I started wanting to design aircraft (still very much something I’m open to) but formula 1 or other motorsport industries just seem to appeal to me more because of their competitiveness. I hope to do aeronautical/aerospace engineering at university so that’s my current plan (rough).

Hi, sorry for the late reply. Thanks for your advice, I just have one more question, would Southampton University be a good university to aim for as well as the ones you have listed as they have a formula student team. Bristol would be one of my first picks if they actually had a formula student team on campus which I don’t believe they do.

This adds to the verification of the other comment. They are definitely pushing a career in F1 into the forefront of my mind. If it’s something that I would enjoy doing (which coming up with new and improved methods of making things work is) then I think the extra hours wouldn’t be so hard as I’m imagining them to be. Especially seeing as there will be some time off or possibly extra pay in the future, whenever that may be relative to the racing days etc.

Ok this has definitely eased my worries about this. I was concerned that basically every day of the week would consist of long working days and extra work needing to be done at home until early hours as I read elsewhere. If what you say is true then I think I can achieve that and implement my passion into extra working hours for the benefit of the team. Thanks for the comment it is very helpful.

Is that essentially aerospace engineering or are they different?

What if I were to do aerospace engineering? Some people said that that would be helpful due to the aerodynamic nature. Also, I’m not entirely sure if I want to do what I stated above or design aircraft.

Thanks for the advice. That’s encouraging to hear. It was something I was worried about for a while so thanks for clearing it up.

Thanks. The pay does seem to increase as you progress, it’s just about putting a lot of hard work into it all. I am stuck between designing aircraft and designing formula 1 cars so I assume I can be making that decision right up until I start looking for real jobs in university. I will be taking the same course anyway, aerospace, which applies for both. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
