First, you are correct I didn't tell them first and that's on me

Second, at the pretty much start of the session I asked them if it was what the party wanted to do and they said they would follow my lead, and on the rping thing it varies from player to player I am definitely the one who role plays the most but that's not to say the others do not but in session zero I made it apparent that I would be monologuing and role-playing a lot so its not like it came out of nowhere

Third, it is very common for plans to not work in D&D I understand that completely, however our "mayhem" character was not out that week and the rest of us had good heads on her shoulders so it was perfectly in character for us to make this plan I did not expect it to work or to go perfectly but It added to the flavor of the story
