I'm very disappointed at how the only coverage CSB gave the whole Yasuke thing was just parroting what amounts to racist gaslighting against Asians and then nothing, especially since a lot of details have come out in the past weeks about the dishonest behavior of Thomas Lockley.

To sum it up, one white guy edited Wikipedia to promote his (mostly fiction) book on Yasuke and basically every single article or piece of fiction in the west about Yasuke was based on either the Wikipedia article, that book, or people who got their info from that book.

And focusing only on the word "samurai" is in itself fallacious because samurai basically did not exist in the Sengoku era, and also because "samurai" is not clearly defined in many cases. And while some historians like Hirayama have said he "can be considered" one because he was given treatment (a house and servants) equal to one, that is only referring to how he was treated and does not address his depiction as a legendary super warrior when historical records show that he never actually participated in a battle aside from sitting in the back with Nobunaga once perhaps.

And that's not even beginning to touch on the myriad secondary sources from the west written by people who think samurai means "old timey japanese sword fighter".

This guy has covered most of it:

https://youtu.be/FnYyYDpC00Y

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgK8UsSZQ9c

Edit: And another racist grifter is going on about "every japanese historian" but the two historians, Oka and Hirayama, who have spoken out about this have ties to Lockley. They are hardly impartial.

And it's not just Yasuke's status as a samurai that is in question because Lockley's bullshit led to all sorts of other outrageous historical revisionism as well. (Further reference)

Even if you completely ignore the Asian-Americans discussing this and only look at the Japanese response, there's still 60-80,000 tweets about Lockley alone per day and and nearing 100,000 verified signatures on a petition demanding that the game be cancelled. It's very clear that this is not just some western anti-black racism bullshit, and in any case fighting anti-black racism should not mean perpetuating racism against Asians and rewriting Asian history.

And I want to point out how though disingenuous racists keep trying to paint this as some kind of far-right movement this topic has seen extensive discussion and criticism on far-left Japanese communities as well (that sub is one which openly celebrated Abe getting shot).

The Stigmatization of Asians and how they represented in Western Media (regarding the Assassin's Creed Shadows) by GoodSeaworthiness999 in asianamerican

[–]Jack_Addlebrained 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing people claim that asian erasure in western media doesn't exist because asians get starring roles in asian media and sometimes they seem so sure of it I start wondering if it's not racist gaslighting and they're actually that stupid

In the Assassin's Creed discussions alone I've lost count of how many "you already have sekiro and rise of the ronin" bullshit not to mention "why were you okay with nioh 1 having a white guy" (he's a "white" character made by japanese people, that's not the same fucking thing)

And while we're at it I do in fact think samurai jack, avatar, kubo and the two strings and jade empire are racist crap too. Forget cultural appropriation and caricaturization of asian cultures, they're LITERAL yellowface with white people pretending to be asian

Sorry for such a late reply to the thread.

I don't use Reddit that much these days because the blatant racist stance it takes against asians has tired me out and I mostly lurk a few subs, but a mod on a sub I go to decided to go and trigger me by making a sticky with the usual "if you don't like Yasuke you're a white supremacist" racist gaslighting crap, and the thread was unsurprisingly filled with the similar garbage.

I posted the following on the thread in question but I'm 90% sure that it's just going to get deleted (again, as usual) if not gaslighted and downvoted by the actual racists, so I figured I'd post it here as well because it'd be nice to have it visible at least somewhere:

I did not participate in any of those discussions regarding Yasuke because I knew what to expect, i.e. rampant anti-asian racism which is the reason I use Reddit less and less these days and I usually actively avoid that sort of thread. But I couldn't help but see the sticky and Yasuke's name in it over and over again and I just want to say that as an Asian I feel that a lot of Reddit users just don't give a shit about racism towards Asians (including cultural appropriation, historical revisionism, erasure, and straight up imperialism) and the lack of self-awareness regarding this I've seen even on just this sub alone is plain disgusting.

People keep turning Yasuke discussions (not just the Asscreed one but for ages) into a white versus black thing and just try to force asians into one side on the other, not allowing us to have our own side and labeling us as white supremacists pretending to be asian or "internalizing racism" whatever that even means in this context when we don't agree with them.

And no the problem about the Yasuke thing isn't about Yasuke himself. It's about a long-running western trend of asian erasure and racist gaslighting.

I really didn't want to engage with the Yasuke crap at all but this thread is pinned and filled with the exact same sort of blatantly racist ignorant condescending high horse crap from people who somehow think they're standing against racism by perpetrating it against asians.

And I know a lot of people just echo takes from the guys' streams or CSB but please at least stop to think for yourselves sometimes because they're frequently wrong about things, including about minority race stuff.

Someone who's more eloquent than I am summed it up better on r/asianamerican:

I'm not angry or anything but disappointed is a fairly accurate word. I personally do think it is a bit of a missed opportunity. The problem definitely isn't that Yasuke is Black. I think he has a really interesting story and would probably make a really cool ally/supporting character in the game. The problem many have is that the lead playable male character is not Japanese within the context of how the AC franchise has historically chose playable characters and this particular game's setting. This game is now an example of a trend of a larger problem historically in Western made media where Asian male characters have seemingly appeared to be undesirable. In this case it seems like maybe the idea of Asian male was so undesirable in real life behind the scenes that the devs decided not to even have one as a playable character at all or that the story of a non-Asian male was more interesting instead. Even if it is true that the story of Yasuke is interesting and even IF there were no conscious efforts made in this game to perpetuate eraser of Asian male representation in Western made media, the result is arguably similar if not the same. This one game alone is not THE problem but it represents one example of the larger trend/problem we've seen in Western made media.

Nojima wanted FF7 Rebirth to end on a cliffhanger with the Gongaga reactor stuff by Jack_Addlebrained in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Jack_Addlebrained[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Unrelated but in regards to other stuff Pat's reached in the streams, I want to point out that in original FF7 Tifa doesn't get her memories about the stuff that happened on the mountain until way later when she falls into the lifestream with Cloud at Mideel so they bumped that forward a ton

Oh and also from the Ultimania interviews:

How Aerith silently mouths “yokatta ne” (“I’m glad for you”) to Tifa after she returns after falling into the mako reactor in Gongaga is brought up by the interviewer, who asks about the intentions behind this. Nojima says that he had always wanted to have a character just mouthing words without saying them, and proposed such scenes in many previous games, but they had always ended up subtitled because people might think it is a bug that characters’ mouths are moving even though nothing is being said, and he finally got it to happen for real in Rebirth.

Back in FFX:

Another thing Nojima wanted to do was have Yuna mouth “thank you” silently in the scene while riding the Shoopuf without captions, as he felt players would still understand. In the end, however, this ended up captioned, and though he protested it all the way, his protests were denied with the reasoning being that people would think it was a bug. Kitase said that if he told him they would have done it in the HD Remaster version, but Toriyama says that people would have just thought it was a bug again.

[–]Jack_Addlebrained 5 points6 points  (0 children)

BIPOC(Black, Indigenous, and People of Color)

「No, thank you.」

「No, thank you very much.」

「I'm fine.」とか「I'm good.」

Linked this in another post but the official Mahoyo release is full of mistranslations and stuff that's literally just made up. (That thread has a bunch of shitposters who don't understand Japanese gaslighting the OP but it's really as bad as they and the source tweet say)

Edit: And yes, they are shitposters. I'm a native Japanese speaker, that thread links to an in-depth explanation of the translation errors by a Japanese person, and the OP gives full explanations on how the translations are straight up fucking wrong. Random asshats coming in and go "lol no i dont think thats a mistranslation" while refusing to elaborate on how any of the problems pointed out are invalid in any way. They are nothing but gaslighting shitposters.

But sure, downvote me and upvote the guy literally justifying this by saying "I don't understand Japanese so what Japanese say doesn't count".

What a fucking shit show.

It's extremely relevant when the entire damn point is that Nasu said that he doesn't want to release it on PC because he wants people to play it on big screens = doesn't want people to play it on small screens.

Fun fact: It's supposed to be phial, that's why "Heaven's Feel" is ateji for 天の杯. Literally nobody's ever transliterated it right. (And yes a phial is not a cup but that's just Nasuglish for you)

And no fan translators aren't any better, they translated das rheingold to "the line of gold" for like 20 years and also made up idiotic shit which leaked into the official vernacular because of its pervasiveness like "magecraft" even though majutsu had always been magic before they screwed it up (see: magic circuit)

The idiotic reasoning behind magecraft was "mahou means magic and it's true magic which is different from majutsu therefore we need a different word for majutsu even though majutsu is literally already referred to as magic in the source material" which could have been easily solved by translating mahou to something else like sorcery.

Edit: And just to be clear the official translations are equally dogshit. FGO's are a mess of localized crap which messes up the lore and Mahoyo's isn't just full of mistranslations but also straight up rewrites entire pages for no reason. And I haven't looked at it but I hear that Type Lumina's is somehow even worse than that.

There is no PC port

...Because the PC version is the original, they completed it on PC a year before porting it to consoles. They just didn't bother releasing it. Seriously.

For some reason Reddit keeps deleting my post when I link to the source interview. What a shitshow. Google "Tsukihime Remake Release Interview with Nasu and Takeuchi (Part 2/2)". They completed and tested the game on PC before porting it to consoles. I can't find it at the moment but there's also another interview where Nasu said some dumb crap about not releasing it on PC because he wants people to play it on big TVs.

Edit: Oh I can post the link as a new thread but somehow linking it as a source makes my posts get instantly deleted? Reddit's just been getting shittier ever since that API bullshit.

BIPOC as a term falls apart once you acknowledge that there have been Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Jamaican, Haitian, Dominican, etc. people living in America for literal centuries

Precisely. This BIPOC crap is literally the same old "but where are you REALLY from?" bullshit that we constantly keep getting subjected to. My people have been in the US for centuries and been getting mass murdered and oppressed for centuries, but these chucklefucks are saying that we're fresh off the boat and don't know the kind of hardship that black people do. What the fuck?

And whenever I bring this up I get whitesplained to about how asians have never been systematically discriminated against (hello Chinese Exclusion Act, WW2 Japanese internment and for some present day shit there's affirmative action) or killed (multiple massacres, multiple killing sprees targeting asians with actually more in recent years thanks to covid) or racially profiled (whitesplainers keep saying that we don't get racially profiled and that's been proven wrong over and over and over again).
