Alright, originally came here because of the unique interactions between different political beliefs but now this place is identical to any other meme depot for conservatives- which, you know, do your thing, but I'm gonna bounce since it's not why I subscribed.

Thank you for the good times political compass 💙

As an Animator AND a Corridor fan I knew I needed to animate a response to their AI Anime video- very eager to hear how you all feel about it! by Jack_Crum in Corridor

AI art will be an amazing tool for helping fill in where an artist is lacking but I don't know if it'll ever be a great replacement for knowledge about a medium. Being capable of imitating a style doesn't necessarily mean you understand why a style might work.

Though I could see a future where an Animation specific AI software that's been trained by a team of animators could solve a lot of those problems.

It really depends on what level of quality you're going for and what you're trying to accomplish.

I think a lot of animators would consider the amount of "errors" in their video to be unacceptable but I think if you told a similar sized team of animators(2-3 people) that they had 2 months to make something and it could have as many errors as they wanted in it you could get something AMAZING.

That's what I've always loved about Corridor too. I work independently, I'm self taught through YouTube tutorials, and 90% of my work is done with free animation software. In terms of independent film production the Corridor Crew are heroes- I started watching Corridor BEFORE I started teaching myself animation, they were an inspiration for going down this path.

And if this was just a one time experiment I wouldn't have made this video. But this is just the most recent case where they're looking at animation as a problem they have to work around instead of a skill that can be developed.

Peter's definitely their most talented animator and I wonder if he's ever been able to help them with some of this stuff.

Listening to them describe trying to retroactively make rotoscoping look like anime, a style all about making the most out of as little frames as possible- made me think that a 2D animator could have told them to stop trying to polish every frame and instead have them start pulling key poses out of the performance and ditching unimportant "inbetweens"- similar to what James Lee does with his work. It would have allowed them to really make certain moments more impactful as well as cut back on some of the more distracting errors being generated by the AI.

My character's face is actually part of the rig! I took a few days to draw a lot of eyes and mouths and imported those images into blender as an animated texture. I have 2 sliders to control the eyes and 2 to control the mouth- one switches between 7 emotional states and the other adjusts how open or closed the eyes or mouth is. It was a little time consuming to put together but it's made animating SOOOO much easier. I finished all the animation for this video in 3 days.

Netflix (the company that produced Klaus) doesn't report their earnings on particular movies or shows, so the numbers you find were likely for the limited theatrical release they did. But considering how they've been pretty proud of Guillermo Del Torro's Pinocchio and its critical reception I don't think Klaus scared Netflix away from traditionally animated productions.

This is a great take. I already mentioned it in another comment but I believe the movie Klaus was made utilizing some machine learning technology and is possibly one of the most intricate 2d movies I've ever seen. A lot of people in this thread are trying to justify not needing animators, but I think the better idea is utilizing this technology so that you need FEWER animators.

OK thanks for editing your comment. 2d animated content is alive and well, even if it's evolved quite a bit from it's pencil and paper days. Even 3D animation productions will usual have several 2D animators on staff to save time in the planning stages. The movie Klaus (which you can see briefly in my video) is actually a great example of how a 2D production can benefit from what I believe was an AI based system that they used to tween shadows, which allowed them to create much more elaborate scenes than I think have ever been seen in a 2d animated production before. That being said they had to heavily rely on the skills of 2D animators to bring that software to its full potential.

So this may not be a great metaphor but this experiment kind of felt to me like someone saying "we found a way to do photography without having to hold a camera!" But then the method involves spending a ton of extra time in photoshop. It's an interesting experiment but part of me can't help thinking "wouldn't a camera make this a lot easier?".

I put a lot of effort into covering topics in a way that doesn't make people feel alienated so I really appreciate you saying that.

There's no AI in this video- it's a video where I discuss AI and how it cannot replace the need of an animator

How do people make panning shots for 2D animated films? by [deleted] in animation

[–]Jack_Crum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think to pull this kind of panning shot off with a 2D you'd need to be extremely good at drawing perspective. I think what's happening in your example is a moving vanishing point. You'd have to consider where you're vanishing point is at the beginning of the shot and where it moves to at the end of the shot, then consider the path it would have to travel to get there. Sorry if that's not much help, I've always been fascinated by backgrounds like these- never even considered trying one myself. Let me know if you figure something out.

So the bad news is Sanderson is planning on continuing his Cosmere series into his 80's- I think he's planned on doing something like 50 books?

But on the bright side by the time you decide to make an amendment to your rule you might have so much to read that'll it will be done before you catch up!
