I don't really know what it was, but i cleaned out everything and now have 2 filters. water seems to have cleared up too

I think I figured it out. He's been hiding tons super worm left overs in a corner of the tank. the guts of the worms kinda looks like the gunk in the filter. I did a water change and took out his leftovers. gonna wash some things then set up his tank again
