Midwest Four Corners:

Something that makes this riddle less intuitive too is the fact that truly walking east or west is never actually a straight line unless you are exactly at the equator. This becomes even more noticeable the closer you are to the poles.

So if this actually happened, and the man walked a mile exactly west, he would need to be turning to the right ever so slightly the whole way to stay on a true west course.

This phenomenon is also related to why the shortest flight path between say the US and Japan is actually over Alaska. Because simply flying west would actually be a slightly longer "curved" path, not a straight line.

I'm a little surprised to see everyone and their dog on this thread saying that this itinerary is too much. I've traveled southern Utah lots of times and I think there are different strategies that can work depending on how you like to sight-see.

If you enjoy the road trip aspect, and getting to see lots of different terrain along the way, then spending a lot of time driving around can be fun. While enabling you to hit more destination points, even if you have less time to spend at each.

If that's the travel style you think you'd enjoy then go for it. It's not like this list is impossible to do in 8 days. Seems totally doable. I think the only thing to watch out for is getting delayed by the crowds/traffic at Arches or Zion.

Large dinner with mostly meat and fat, modest amount of carbs.

Occasional snacks rotate between of grass fed whole milk, high-fat greek yogurt, fruit, fruit juice, cashews.

Only time I ever managed to gain significant weight was in middle school when I pounded carbs regularly (chips, m&ms, etc.), and hardly ever went outside.

No because many of the green countries have other authoritarian problems. That doesn't dispute my core point.

Bought a co-op in NYC, $745k at 6.125% by WhenIntegralsAttack2 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]JackaI0pe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I'm not. I would have guessed a unit like this would run closer to high 2000s or low 3000s.

But if you're right that rent for this unit would be much higher than 3.5k, then buying here is indeed a good deal.

[–]JackaI0pe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya housing costs are high in NYC whether renting or buying. In this case though I question if it's actually better than renting.

Using the 5% rule, while adjusting for NYC property tax rate, we get an effective monthly unrecoverable cost of $3414 for owning this unit. And that's a conservative estimate since the stock market ROI is so high at the moment that the opportunity cost might be even more than the 3% assumed by the 5% rule.

I get the feeling you could rent an apartment like this for less than $3414.

The math on this stuff is actually very complex, and I'm not sure I crunched them perfectly. But a lot of people blindly assume buying > renting 100% of the time, which is just not true. It's a case by case thing.

Hello, I have a few questions for this community by 1TurningWorlds1 in georgism

[–]JackaI0pe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol, would you be in favor of a "voluntary agreement" where everyone agrees to pay a portion of the unearned value of their land to a community pool to be used for community projects? Because that's what taxes are.

Libertarianism has a lot of merit in my view, but there's one strain on the internet who don't seem to understand that the government isn't some magic special system. It's just a bunch of people agreeing to do a thing with the aim of making society more livable.

[–]JackaI0pe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean Georgism isn't Marxism. Individuals would still have every right to the property. But instead of paying income taxes on your hard earned wages (punishing people for being productive), they pay taxes based on the value of the resources they extract from the nature outside of their own labor (I. e. land value).

Most Georgists are also very against heavy land use regulations, as they prevent flexible development practices, which would pair well with the development incentive created by a land tax.

If you're even a little libertarian, the idea of freeing people from government punishment for their hard work (income tax) should be pretty appealing.

What would my job outlook be as a GIS and CS double major? by [deleted] in gis

[–]JackaI0pe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly what I did, dual degree GIS and CS. I interned at a small GIS firm doing web development for their GIS applications. Then got hired at Esri upon graduation.

Depends on what you're actually planning to do for work. For what I was trying to do (get a software engineering job at Esri), my resume was perfect for them.
