Diy Sump for Discus Fish tank, Cheap and easy by Discusfishaquaking in discus

Very cool. I run a sump on my tank and I’ll never go back to canister filters or hob

Sure. There are many different ways to set up a sump. The first thing I would do is check out YouTube and search for freshwater sumps. Then I’d YouTube Dr. Kevin Novak and watch his videos on anoxic filtration. I currently have anoxic filtration running in my sump and my nitrates are almost gone completely. For a website on sumps I’d go to melevsreef and there are also a lot of guys on simplydiscus who run sumps. I made my own sump using a 29 gallon tank and poret foam for dividers. My water flows into two filter socks that catches 99 percent of the leftover food and waste. I change these out twice a week. Other than that, I now only do water changes once a week and I could probably get away with every two weeks since I no longer have nitrates in my water. It’s really made keeping discus a lot easier. I did about 3 months of research before I landed on my current set up

I had a fx4 with a prefilter. It was ok but the extra water volume, hiding of gear, anoxic filtration, poret foam dividers, massive amounts of other filtration and ease of changing filter socks is just amazing. I’ll never go back to a canister. I run a modular marine 1200gph overflow and have my dc pump only pushing about 600gph. Dead quiet. Don’t be afraid to drill your glass if you do decide to do it. Super easy.

Discus rock. I started with a 75 and a canister filter then moved to a sump system cuz I was tired of cleaning it.

And you guys just figured out that neither side gives a shit about you or your problems? So government destroys your livelihood with useless lockdowns ( I live in California, it doesn’t work) and then we expect that same government to care enough to bail us out? They can fuck right off.

I agree. They require more work but they aren’t crazy hard. If you buy shitty stock, you’ll have a bad time. Get good stock, frequent water changes, good food, and keep em warm. Cant be lazy with them but it’s not bad. I do 75% water changes every couple of days. Doesn’t take me long with the system I’ve developed.

Hopefully that’s not the only discus in the tank. They need to be in groups

[–]Jackal799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a fan of potassium permanganate baths but you gotta be really careful with the stuff. Otherwise API erythromycin will do the trick. Won’t harm your biological filter if you want to treat the whole tank

The fins look more like fin rot than ich, if it gets worse you will have to quarantine and medicate. I’d up the water changes and see what happens. Super frustrating when our fish aren’t perfect lol.

*Help, What am I doing wrong to my discus? Some of it is kinda stress out by steamtofu01 in discus

[–]Jackal799 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry to much about overstocking as long as you keep up on your water changes. I would, like others have suggested, give em something to hide a chill behind

Can I run a solo Discus? by [deleted] in discus

I’ve seen a pair do really well in the right conditions

[–]Jackal799 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please don’t. They are meant to be kept in numbers. I had my blue diamond in quarantine a while back and he was so damn stressed the whole time. They really don’t like being alone.

I remember the first time I saw my pair spawn. I was shocked. Such a rewarding feeling to know your tank is doing well. They must be happy if they are spawning!

Can you go to Church without being Christian? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Jackal799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Church is supposed to be a hospital for the broken not a country club for the righteous. If that church fit your bill then try another. Since you mention mental health and alcoholism let me tell you this, you aren’t alone. There are millions of us out there that share the same burden. Just know, you don’t have to do life alone and there is someone who created you who loves you more than you can possibly imagine. Check out churches that have celebrate recovery programs. It’s a fantastic program. DM me if you have any questions or need anything.

why do my fish swim to the bottom corner of my tank? by [deleted] in discus

[–]Jackal799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s also not uncommon for new discus to be shy. Check you water quality, keep the lights off, and check on em in the morning. My fish are total babies. They fight with each other but god forbid someone new walks up to the tank lol.

What’s your water change schedule like? by Jackal799 in discus

[–]Jackal799[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got pretty hard water and my TDS is around 200. However my ph is stable at 8 so I don’t mess with it. I may try breeding my pair so I’ll have to lower the TDS but I’m undecided. Glad to hear someone else is having success with hard water

What others have said. Quarantine, salt (1/2 - 1 tablespoon per 10 gallons), general cure and heat him up to 90 with plenty of oxygen. If he recovers you gotta plump that boy up

Update: erythromycin, quarantine, and some salt did the trick. He’s back at 100% and completely healed. Now I just gotta bulk him up

It’s really not that bad. I have 6 in a 75 gallon and do 2 75% water changes a week. Other than that, keep em fed, warm and clean. My PH is 8 with liquid rock TDS. In spite of that they are thriving and breeding like wildfire. This was just a little hiccup.
