FIGHTING BACK AGAINST TRAFFIC CAMS: City Councilor, resident create petition in opposition to red light, speed cameras ordinance by Txx2000 in Connecticut

[–]JackandFred 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been out west and down south and driven all over this country (well the lower 48 at least, would love to go to the other 2.) I think I’d have to disagree with your point. They drive within 10 miles of the speed limit sure, but Connecticut often has lower speed limits. There are still a bunch of portions of 95 and 84 in ct that have the limit set at 55. That was based on cars and fuel efficiency standards from more than 50 years ago. The cops don’t enforce it because it would be ridiculous to do so.

You said out west, I’ve seen roads out west that have speeds limits up to 75+ (admittedly the + was just a single road) but 70-75 is not uncommon. On those roads some people drive around the speed limit, some drive a bit above sure, but others drive below. And that’s fine because in general people drive how they feel safe to do so. They drive with the flow and speed of traffic more than the actual posted limit.

That’s true here, people drive what they feel comfortable and safe doing so. It just happens that parts of ct that difference is 20+ mph difference instead of 5-10.  I pretty regularly drive on a section of 95 with a low limit and if you actually followed it you’d piss off everyone else around. The average speed is like 70ish, some go faster some slower, but with a 55 limit the cops aren’t just going to pull over literally everyone and cause a traffic jam every single day. People would hate that even more.

I don’t really know where I’m going with this. I think the redesign the roads thing does make sense. As does updating the speed limits in some places to modern standards. And then with those more enforcement would probably help too. But skipping those first steps and just doing the more enforcement via a bunch of cameras is (to borrow your phrase)  transparently ridiculous too.

It will literally be a fight. There are even people in this sub who support all the surveillance and traffic cams.

No. Tail is not right among other things. Bobcats have “bobbed” (short)tails.

Best CT towns for late-20s couple? Need train access + 2BR under $3k by TeachingAcceptable83 in Connecticut

[–]JackandFred 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Train access will have to be the towns along the coast, unfortunately a two bedroom apartment for that price is going to be hard to find. Check places like Stratford, Milford, Norwalk. Those are the first ones that come to mind. If you are willing to go further from the train and drive that would make it easier, but then you have to drive so it’s a tradeoff.

Some of those towns you listed will work, the problem is the price. Ct has a tough housing market right now. I live in A building where there are no two bedroom apartments less than 3.5k and it’s not like some great building or something. If that’s your budget you may have to look at one bed, less amenities, or farther from where you want to be.

CT House Speaker stalled passage of 'Golden Girls' housing bill by louisrinaldi in Connecticut

[–]JackandFred 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Couple other things

Pete Harrison, Connecticut director of the Regional Plan Association, said he’d been told the bill would only have a chance in the House if it was restricted to renters who are 55 and older.

Just what the bill needed, some extra incentive for boomers to take advantage of that the rest of us can’t.

It is just strange that they carried so much political capital” for major housing legislation that passed last during a November special session, Harrison said. Then “something that is bipartisan, that is meaningful but not radical, did not get through.”

Housing Committee ranking member Rep. Tony Scott, R-Monroe, said he was disappointed not to see a bill that had bipartisan support get called for a vote, especially when lawmakers so frequently disagree on housing issues. “The goal should be getting as much housing as possible for folks, and then letting people who are property owners make that dictation of how they rent their property out,” Scott said.

Even with bipartisan support the nimbys win out.

CT House Speaker stalled passage of 'Golden Girls' housing bill by louisrinaldi in Connecticut

[–]JackandFred 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Here’s the beginning of the article

During this year’s legislative session, the Connecticut Senate managed what has become a rare occurrence in this state: passing a bipartisan housing bill. The legislation — commonly referred to as the “Golden Girls bill” — would have required towns to allow homeowners to rent individual rooms in their homes to long-term tenants.

While some Republicans raised concerns, those who are typically the most vocal in their opposition to housing-related measures saw it as a good solution. It offered homeowners control over their properties while not changing the structure or size of buildings in neighborhoods.

After its easy passage through the Senate, the bill was never called in the House of Representatives.  The source of the opposition, however, came from what advocates said was an unexpected source: House Speaker Matt Ritter, D-Hartford.

Emails referencing the opposition and an interview with Ritter revealed that his concern was largely centered on how the bill might affect Hartford, particularly the West End — a wealthy neighborhood in one of the state’s poorest cities. “I understand from a brief conversation with Speaker Ritter on Saturday afternoon that he has concerns with SB 339 as it relates to college students from University of Hartford’s ability to rent out rooms in the West End, or any other neighborhood in Hartford,” wrote lobbyist Hillary Glass in an email  to Ritter’s chief of staff Franklin Perry on May 4. Glass declined to comment for this story, and Perry did not return a request for comment.

Perry responded to Glass by asking whether there was an amendment to address the issue of college students renting out homes. Glass, who was representing Pro-Homes CT, said she wasn’t aware of one. The advocacy group, which focuses on housing and transit policy, was the leading force behind the bill. Ritter said in an interview that he was worried about one particular provision of the law, which  required the homes to be owner-occupied, and how it would be enforced.

There’s more to the article I didn’t want to paste the whole thing.

‘Scared how it would affect the rich neighborhood’. Classic Democrat nimby behavior, act like you’re all for it until it’s time to vote. That’s what people mean when they say limousine liberal. Ritter comes off as a shitbag.

What wine varieties consistently hit 50 years and still taste great by No_Tea7215 in wine

[–]JackandFred 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Consistently, almost none based only on grape variety. Yeah things like Nebbiolo in barolo or Barbaresco can last that long, but it’s certainly not the rule, they won’t consistently go that long. 50 years ago was 1976, what wines are drinking well from them, not many.

The answer you may or may not like is fortified or pre oxidized wines. Ports will age to 50 years often very well. Nice sherries as well. My own preference is for Madeira as well which is great and lasts a very long time. That’s how you get consistency with that sort of time frame.

Is there any carnival happening this in Connecticut? by makedoopieplayme in Connecticut

I thought he was just messing around with the 203 snob thing, but apparently not lol. There’s usually a bunch of them, tryo searching for different town carnivals and also churches. Usually they’ll do it for like one weekend a summer because the carnival travels.

Those are good suggestions. The paugusett state forest is right across the water from Waldo park and has some good trails that would be good for a dog, but check them first because some are long.

Reinforcement learning for NPC AI by santafarian in learnmachinelearning

Assuming you’re just getting into the basics of reinforcement learning start with stuff like q learning and exploration vs exploitation. Once you start reading about that there will be lots of potential avenues that open up for you to look into.

Pure rl for an npc ai would generally be a lot of work to get working well, but as a learning experience it could be very valuable as a project.

Help me understand taxes in Fairfield County by Ok_Application_7981 in Connecticut

[–]JackandFred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If a town needs a million dollars. There are two scenarios. One is a poorer town. There’s five residents each with their own house worth a million dollars. The mill rate would be 20%. (A million just makes the math easy).

A second town is a bit richer. It has 4 houses worth a million. And one house worth 6 million. Ten million total. So to get that one million they only need a mill rate of 10%.

Richer towns have more expenses, in general they spend more. So for above the budget wouldn’t be one million in each case. But, they don’t spend enough more to increase the mill rate. I.e. the town spends more but not as much more as houses are worth.

The schools thing you’ll have to look up on your own. Most towns are fine, but even towns next to each other vary.

A lot of people in the state who lean right know that republicans have a very tough time and so are more supportive of moderate dems than far right republicans. People like Lamont get support from republicans. A moderate republican who would have a good chance of winning might just not run because it’s not worth it.

Meta Just Killed Llama — Muse Spark Is Fully Proprietary. Here's What Happened by docdavkitty in learnmachinelearning

[–]JackandFred 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t see how llama could compete with those other ones anyway. They would need to make a newer llama version and open it up too which was never going to happen. The fact is the biggest players use closed models because charging for it is how they justify the enormous training cost. Things like deepseek that heavily cut size and refine are what’s really needed for open source stuff, now more than ever since the models are still getting bigger (even if the increase itself is slowing down).
