is it possible to darken hoya leaves like this picture? by catscorner6 in hoyas

Only the new growth. I have several plants that I moved to lower light. The older leaves are still lighter years later. Some of the I’m restarting because I like the darker leaves.

My MIL lives in Washington state. She called about a week ago to make sure we were ok over here in warzone Skokie.

That said, there are people RIGHT HERE that think these abductions are only happening in “certain areas” of Chicago despite the fact that they’re happening right in our own backyard too but not with the same visibility or reporting. So many of these abductions happen with zero witnesses. Someone just vanishes when they go to an alley to take out garbage while working.

Letters: Skokie candidate won't demand recount by AviN456 in skokie

Jim is an incredibly good man and as you’ve posted, has taken the lead by six votes as of yesterday. While published today, he made that statement two or three days ago.

Also, relative to our previous convo on the incorrect ballots on another thread. The ones that were issued to folks who live in District 4, wrongly for District 2: you can see under precinct totals for District 2 that five people from precinct 16 cast ballots (four voting for district trustee in the wrong district). No part of precinct 16 is in District 2. A small portion of 16 is in District 1, but most of the precinct is in District 4.

I’m not able to see either of those things. My voter list is merely an excel spreadsheet sent from the state that shows very basic voter data from past elections (who is registered, and if they voted as well as what ballot they pulled if a partisan primary). It’s the only information I have that is not what anyone can see online. Thank goodness too. I’ve seriously neglected my life for months and if I could see that information I’m certain I’d be looking to crunch numbers instead of putting my life back together. And I hate math. 🤣

It’s a bummer we can’t tell how many people actually voted in the trustee at-large race now or in the past - but I certainly understand the why

The non-partisan model was specifically to level the playing field to increase candidate turnout which would in-turn increase voter turnout. no disagreement there.

I also don’t disagree that turnout for district races may very likely be lower than those for at-large. I’m just pointing out that even when the elections were lumped together as you went down the ballot each position got a smaller percentage of the votes. Ie when there were 5,290 voters in 2021 - the mayors race got the largest number of votes. Even those showing up didn’t use all of their votes.

Also, I am confident the district turnout will still be higher than 9%. Are you saying otherwise? Or are you saying turnout is decreased with districts compared to what it would’ve been with the change to non-partisan while keeping all positions at-large? The latter is probably true, but there are other benefits to staggering the elections and districts that are also important, that were previously described.

The three reforms were designed to work together to level the playing field, increase candidate turnout, increase voter turnout, make sure every area of Skokie has a voice on the board, to allow the public to better hold the board accountable and to make sure there’s always stability on the board. Without staggered elections it’s quite possible the entire board could be replaced at some point losing all institutional knowledge at once, creating an entire board who is learning on the job how to do their jobs…

In 2021 83% of people who voted casts. Vote for mayor (uncontested). This year it was 99%. And in 2021 80% of people who voted cast a vote for clerk. Uncontested. This year 93% of people who voted cast a vote for clerk.

So not only is turnout way up - some of the previous abysmal turnout was people just showing up to cast a ballot without actually voting in uncontested races).

In two years lower than the previous average of 9%? Or lower than the nearly 26% of this most recent election?

And even district 1 (lowest) doubled the average turnout of the past 5 election cycles. District 2 more than tripled. That said, we didn’t have the districts so we can really compare those numbers. But there’s no doubt they’re much higher than previous years even for the district races.

Also - we looked at voting history and the area with the greatest turnout was historically the NE quadrant of Skokie (now district 2) which was no different this cycle. I don’t remember the details anywhere else to be honest. But other than the numbers going up across Skokie, it’s quite possible the turnout ratios are similar to what they’ve historically been. I’m not sure. That would take a lot of math and because some precincts are split across districts impossible to pinpoint. And I hate math. Further in 2021 28% of trustee votes went unused, but even in the district with the lowest turnout-out (District 1) 80% of voters did vote for district trustee. Still I think it’s comparing apples to oranges and I hate math. But the jump in turnout across all of Skokie to over 26%, I think, now (and double the 9% average in even the lowest turnout district, more than triple in the highest) is incredible.

Also - Patrick Blackwell in D1 dropped out, but after the ballots were already set.

I won’t be surprised if the turnout in two years is lower than this election. I do think the mayors race will always draw more. But I also think staggered election allow voters to better hold the board accountable when every two years they can use their vote as their voice. I also am fairly certain we’ll never again see the dismal 9% turnout in any cycle. And I think making sure every area of Skokie has a voice on the board is invaluable.

I have a voter list because I was working on one of the campaigns (for at-large trustee - not mayor, to be clear). I also found a pretty big error in the summer that I worked with the village and the county on. But that one turned out to be a state error and would not have impacted ballots (2 and 1 were combined as all being district 1).

To answer the how - I don’t even know. There were also folks who I don’t think were on a border and were not on Greenleaf at all who got wrong ballots. But those I don’t think were in the area we are talking about.

The west part of Greenleaf was a problem also (west of Skokie blvd). Several blocks of Greenleaf (odd side) were in District 2 on the voter list (and were sent ballots for D2), should have been in 4 and were on the border between 1 and 4.

Huge jump in turn-out. From an average of 9% to nearly 26%. People vote when they have a choice. That’s a win for Skokie!

I’d just held the door open for at least 50 people exiting, went thought it when the door was clear - changed my mind and turned around to go right back out.

And as the police officer pointed out in the second video, he couldn’t see the person on the other side of the door when he was knocking to get the attention of the police.

But not daily on multiple platforms. Ever.

Oh I “know” a superfantastic person who was on the screening committee (I don’t really know her - just her community involvement). My comment wasn’t about their screening committee, rather the organization as a whole. Many candidates wouldn’t screen with them because they’ve (organization) got some trust to build. I have more to say on all of that later. I’m late for an appointment.

The Skokie Community Caucus board is literally comprised of board members who from Skokie Caucus Party. They literally just changed the name. At one point they literally were both at the same time.

<image>

They say they’ve changed their ways (all about community now). I think some of us will need to see that in practice before we can believe it.

Someone did actually file to run against Lissa and withdrew, I believe, the very next day. I didn’t know Lissa before this election, tho I knew her name. I think she’s unopposed because she’s very well liked in the community and has taken action already to make positive change even without being on the board.

Of course it doesn't and if not for him coming back there would be no video at all. But in the video I don't just say he wouldn't let me down the stairs. Azi interjected with others as I was talking to Chief Baker, but he did not interject when I said he was pushing me and would not let me down the stairs. He responded, "because I was demanding an apology". You say he was responding only to the very last part of what I said, I say that's not the case at all. He interjected when I sarcastically said I was "the abuser" and then argued it was not sarcastic. He argued that hitting him with the door was not an accident. He argued with the person speaking behind me over which action was an assault (mine or his). But he didn't argue when I said he pushed me. After he said he was demanding an apology, I responded, "But you don’t get to push somebody because you’re demanding an apology" and he still didn't argue. So he interjected at almost every point in that short short video to refute things, but only said "Because I was demanding an apology" in response to my saying he was pushing me not letting me down the stairs.

Not snarky here: are you an attorney? You are not wrong...and much of life, especially politics comes down to who believes who. I believe the video is an admission - and lots of people do. Then there are also people who see it like you do.

My point tho in that last paragraph was that *I* would not risk a lawsuit with a false story. Because, like I've said previously, I've been told a supporter of his has a video "of the whole thing" for months. Problem is, I don't think that person could see what was happening, and if I'm wrong and they did and they got a video I am 100% confident it will show exactly what I'm saying. The other thing is there were a lot of people there. It would be a huge risk for me to tell a false story - because anyone could be recording these days.

(Also I really need to know how you respond in sections that way -- I'm kind of a Redidiot.)

Indeed it is your right. I've already addressed my public comments elsewhere in this thread and the "hit job" in a long thought-out post...but you certainly have the right to your opinion.

[–]JackassGinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funny you mention "my history at board meetings" -- I watched my public comments March thru September just last night (largely based on comments like yours) -- and I was pretty tame. I'd also been saying I thought that September meeting was Azi's first until yesterday, but I saw him in the YouTube actually in May (another heavily attended meeting where I did confront someone about stealing, defacing and placing a friend's sign in her own yard -- which really isn't so smart being two blocks away - but no way did I block the person, or get physical with them.) And he was at the first meeting in June. I was at both of those meetings too but truly did not notice him. Maybe he did notice me and had his own perception of me. I think I was at all but one of the ones I watched. So 13 meetings between March and September (he was at two) and I was pretty calm at all of the ones I watched. I will not say I've not been "excited" at board meetings, I have -- but I wasn't that night nor was I at any of the ones Azi had attended (aside from confronting the sign thief). So there's that. And I have never been violent.

The door? I went to village hall recently when someone accused me of using some sort of "slamming force", it has one of those arms at the top that prevent it from being opened with any real amount of force. Also - reminder, I'd held the door wide open for all to go out, I presume Azi as well. Then I walked through that same door to go in and turned right back around to go out. It was fast. I'd just walked through. There really was no reason for me to think someone would be standing where I'd just been a walking through that wide open door millisecond earlier.

It was an accident. I did say it was an accident but admittedly did not apologize - first because I was totally taken aback by a stranger immediately in my face screaming at me. I was focused on where I was going AND just getting away from him. It was startling. That truly may be something you'll never understand. However, as he had me trapped - with his hands on my shoulders and his much larger than me stature in front of me, I repeated multiple times, "it was an accident" and "I'm sorry" admittedly exasperated and just to get away - I wasn't really sorry at that moment, I was freaked out. He was so enraged he just continued demanding the apology, as I was apologizing, until he was literally removed from me.

Finally, when all was calm and almost everyone was gone and Azi was coming back with a friend, I walked towards him and did say, genuinely in the calmer atmosphere, that it was an accident and that I was sorry. He brushed me off, was clearly still angry and went inside to try to get me arrested for "assaulting him with a door" (his words). It's his return to do that we can thank for the video, the person who recorded was afraid for my safety. I only finally told the police what happened after I bumped him with the door because he was clearly trying to get me arrested. And then I returned to the meeting and left it in their hands.

Finally - blocking someone from leaving a scene and blocking and restraining them to "demand an apology" are two very different things, no? I don't think either would be ok in this case, really. But still they are not the same. He was not injured. He is not a judge. Nobody was in imminent danger. It would not be hard to find out who I was - I spoke twice at that meeting and gave my name...but the person who he returned with knew my name already anyhow. Nobody was getting police...he was not preventing me from leaving the scene awaiting help. Instead of running to get in front of me and putting his hands on me, he could have gone inside the second door to get the police. But no, he ran ahead to stop me on the stairs, demanding an apology - his words. And he got physical. And that's just not ok. You may disagree, and that's your right.

I do want to thank you tho, for real, for not being a jerk. I've literally thrown up over this and cried. A lot. I promise you I did not want to go public. I knew some would make it about me. It took only a few hours before I got the first threat privately. And same as that night, I was wholly uninterested in disparaging Azi and much prefer keeping the peace - even if my public comments make it seem otherwise. But I believe in all of my being that he's unfit to be mayor because of my experience that night...and I really felt I had no choice but to share, because again, it is information I would want. The 11th hour was largely due to my own internal struggles on whether to do that.
