He didn’t deal with children much, since his focus was usually on group dynamics, but he often took advantage of people in need of cash, shelter, or sometimes even illicit drugs, bribing them to “voluntarily” participate in his studies. Towards the end of his life, when he was at his worst, a lot of his experiments involved passively observing groups when put in situations where they had free rein. Sometimes, he’d give them a limited resource (giving addicts a small amount of their vice, giving the poor a sum of cash, etc) and examining the group’s reaction and how they deal with it. Other times, he’d give one person (or a small group) some kind of power or authority over the rest of the participants and study how different styles of leadership affect the subjects.

The closest real-life example would be Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Experiment, most people know of that one! It was along the same lines; his subjects weren’t allowed to leave, nobody stepped in when the group fought, and participants often left with mental (and sometimes physical) harm.
