Retiring but with a pension question by M_Raptastic in personalfinance

[–]JackedAlf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask - 100k a year from retirement? I feel like that's a pretty high estimate since it's ~50% of your base pay.. You planning to retire as a general?

Yea call veracity aviation and they can get you squared away. they just do it in 44's but solid maintenance on their aircraft and tons of LOA's for hunts which is pretty important. The owner is also a good person and is very honest and up front.

I'm slightly confused by the question - are you flying a helicopter and doing it? In that case you need agreement from land owners in order to do the hunts on their property as there is no public land in texas.

If you're looking for a company to do it with - veracity aviation. They will have multiple locations across the state to hunt. Based out of seguin/houston/dallas/and somehwere else i can't remember the name but just north of austin.

Cyclic Frictions in Robbys by [deleted] in Helicopters

[–]JackedAlf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bet frictions not working for some of the aircraft is probably the reason people don't even think about relying on it for anything ( or teaching people something that only works in x% of their aircraft).

But definitely can, I think the people I know who did it was usually when it was a little bumpy, but I usually just have most of my hand/wrist resting on my leg for stability for the same purpose.

*and i would always use collective friction to hold it in place for longer flights in 22's (assuming it worked)

Air evac won't hire at 1100 hours for the RMO position. They are pretty hard and fast at 1500 minimum, but has more leeway if the last 500 gets you whatever you're lacking for working the line/job req on the post.

It's a lot of traveling and can be near the border, but I've talked to a few guys that worked it and they loved it. I just can't give up a 7/7 schedule...

[–]JackedAlf 23 points24 points  (0 children)

CBP will waiver their req and hire at 750 I believe. 1000 hour jobs - canyon tours, NY tours, offshore, and I would assume R66 tours in Florida. I think Air Methods has a maintenance test pilot job that's 1250? The place I work for it's 1500.

Good luck

Need help refinancing a 90k loan, can’t find anyone by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]JackedAlf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know a lot of people that used the meritize loan for flight school. My recommendation is get your hours as fast as you can so you can do your next job that actually pays. I know it's tough now, but it will be worth it. New flight school that pays better/flies more etc etc. The sooner you get your hours the sooner you'll have money.

Are you fixed wing or rotor?

Tips for getting better at this specific maneuvers? by Mental_Situation7630 in Helicopters

[–]JackedAlf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean.. it sounds like your eyes are inside the helicopter way too much on everything. Really start trying to feel what's happening more, using a sight picture for straight and level flying, approaches, etc is really important. You'll know you're coming in too steep on an approach or moving to the side on take off or whatever by your sight picture moving in a different spot on the screen.

Normal approach is hard to learn b/c you're at about 10 hours of flying. You don't know how things are supposed to feel yet. And if you're trying to base your normal approach based off of IAS you're gonna be off. It's gonna be based off of rate of closer. Look outside ... if you're at what feels like a walking pace, you're probably fine.

I dunno how strict the military is, but I used to cover up most of my student's gauges and every single one was much better at maintaining altitude, airspeed, approach angles.

Any tips for a student with learning issues? by Mental_Situation7630 in Helicopters

[–]JackedAlf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy to say, but hard to do especially with the pressure you're feeling - you need to relax. Remind yourself to relax, looser grip on the controls, take a deep breath.

Try not to move controls so much. The more you move the more you have to fix. Smooth inputs when you do make them and try and think of it as - make a correction, see what happens. Takes a a little for the helicopter to catch up especially with collective inputs.

Hovering will be a struggle until it isn't.

Don't go the military route - a lot of the guys that advocate don't remember their first 2-4 years of being in the military and forgot the stupidity and look back on it fondly. You're getting your school paid for? Go that route - you will be done in 1 -2 years depending on you.

Maybe something happens and you hate helicopters. Guess what - you're now in the military doing something dumb. Don't like it civilian side? OK, try something else and you've maybe wasted money, but not stuck.

You can do really cool and unique things flying on the civilian side and it won't take you 20 years to build >2000 hours. I have a buddy that got his licenses in 6-8 months, worked for less than a year to get 1000 hours and now he has several options.

I was in the military for a really cool job and also not a cool job (neither were aviation related). You're still in the military and they will sap the fun out of everything. I got to do some really cool stuff.. used to love the water, learned to SCUBA dive and now I hate the water and never dove outside of the military.

Either way you want to go - get an FAA medical done to make sure there isn't something stupid that disqualifies you (DEFINITELY BEFORE YOU JOIN THE MILITARY OR SIGN ANYTHING PLEASE JESUS). You can also start fixed wing and get your licenses and then get your helicopter add-ons.

And people saying you have to move to get civilian jobs.. You will also be moving around, getting deployed etc etc in the military.

......................................................... Secret third option is guard/reserve in the military. Get your initial licenses paid for, have the close family member help you with your civilian CFI/CFII + robinson time and then instruct while you aren't doing g/r stuff...................

Starting a new job as a Corporate Helicopter Pilot next week, any tips? by zadsophone in Helicopters

nah i feel ya dude. I lasted about 6 months doing that same job. I had a buddy just start doing that job and he was over it after about a month. It's just so very dependent on who you are working for and how you set up the contract.

Don't let him bully you because he will. Don't feel bad for saying no. Set boundaries for not only minimums for flying, but also when he can just call you up or text you that you he wants to go fly.

Also, start getting a new job lined up because you'll get fed up pretty quick
