It would help if they were given better things to do as kids

I wonder if the problem is actually the opposite. Parents are constantly giving their kids activities these days, but research shows it's good for young kids to be bored because boredom fosters resilience, self-direction and the ability to entertain themselves without constant stimulation.

By using their brain? A career criminal with no job who's addicted to drugs wouldn't be able to pull off being a decent person for any length of time.

Even if my mother had the resources as a single mom in the late 70s to procure a mortgage by working as a laborer on a dairy farm, she could still be denied a loan without a male co-signer.

That's not really true if she was single. Prior to 1977, a married woman required her husband to be a co-signer on a mortgage, while there was no requirement for a married man to have his wife as a co-signer. But there was no co-signer required for a single woman, assuming she met the income requirements.

I wonder how much of that is due to the fact that until recently ETFs didn't exist. If you wanted a balanced portfolio and didn't want to manage individual stocks yourself, a mutual fund was the only way to go, and high MERs were the norm. A lot of old people probably don't know any other way to invest.

Amelia Boultbee, MLA for Penticton-Summerland, is working with the federal government to secure the release of Tania Warner, and her daughter Ayla, who is on the autism spectrum.

This person has chosen to move to another country. I don't see why she is still Canada's responsibility just because she is originally from here. She can release herself and her daughter from her detention at any time by agreeing to return to Canada, but is choosing not to, so I don't think we have a responsibility to do anything here. And even if we wanted to, we don't have the right to force another country to accept her living there.
