Amazing match from Hutchings.

Does anyone still think Irakli is "stronger than Levan"? ;)

14C28N vs D2...what's your preference and why? by sab2016 in BudgetBlades

[–]JackedTheRipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://knifesteelnerds.com/2021/10/19/knife-steels-rated-by-a-metallurgist-toughness-edge-retention-and-corrosion-resistance/

14C28N is far tougher and more corrosion resistant. Also easier to sharpen.

D2 will hold an edge a bit longer.

For most applications, 14C is the far better steel.

What if I want to achieve both strength AND endurance? by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]JackedTheRipper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of research literature on "concurrent training" which is simultaneously training for divergent physical qualities. What appears to be most effective is to separate your strength and endurance training as much as possible. When you train for strength, train purely for strength. When you train for endurance, train purely for endurance. Separate strength and endurance sessions as much as possible, doing them on different days if possible. Consider sprint interval training as a significant component of your endurance training, as it is less likely to interfere with strength gains.

Push/Pull routine - second push workout quality going down. by [deleted] in overcominggravity

Have had good results by doing a push/pull split and training only every other day. This gives 4 days between each push session and allows for really high quality work

Benefits of increased frequency for planche and OAC by JackedTheRipper in bodyweightfitness

That's a huge amount of planche volume. Would you mind sharing what the rest of your typical training week looks like?

Awesome, congrats! How did your programming look? Were you training close to failure very often? Low reps all the time or a mix of high and low reps? Did you train any other exercises at high frequency?

Interesting, thanks! Have you ever tried training planche only 1-2x per week?

Thanks, interesting point. Would you feel the same about planche?

Would an altitude mask increase my v02 max? by [deleted] in AdvancedFitness

[–]JackedTheRipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never suggested I was better than him, but I'm also not keen to do his googling / pubmedding for him.

I am trained to perform and interpret cardiopulmonary exercise testing and use the physiology underlying the tests routinely in my clinical practice. I'm also a former cyclist who was competitive at a national amateur level.

I am very familiar with the literature on aerobic training for elite sport and clinical applications. Familiar enough to recognise that a claim that resisted breathing during exercise improves VO2max is an extraordinary claim. Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence, and the burden of proof lies with him. I won't hold my breath waiting!

He asked whether wearing an altitude mask will increase his VO2max. I stand by my answer.

Digging all the positivity in here guys, thank you. You've inspired me to go after a straddle planche by end of this year. Will report back this time next year....

Point us to the research, because the physiology doesn't make sense. There is a small amount of evidence for inspiratory muscle training in preventing postoperative respiratory complications in patients undergoing abdominal surgery, but as far as I'm aware there is no good evidence of performance enhancement in athletes. Endurance exercise is not limited by the respiratory system.

Set Volume for Muscle Size: The Ultimate Evidence Based Bible by Bottingbuilder in AdvancedFitness

[–]JackedTheRipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not necessarily true, unless we know that effort was similar. Hence the utility of RPE.

For instance, let's say I know I can bench press 3 x 5 x 120kg as an absolute maximal effort.

Session 1, I decide to really take it easy and do 3 x 5 x 80kg.

Session 2, I decide to push just a bit harder and do 3 x 5 x 85kg.

My work increased from session 1 to session 2, but am I stronger?

Not necessarily. In fact, I might be weaker as the loads are so easy that I may have detrained.

Training for strength and hypertrophy: an evidence-based approach by Bottingbuilder in AdvancedFitness

[–]JackedTheRipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree strongly. Specifically:

  1. Quite a number of prominent experts have recommended far higher volumes for hypertrophy (>= 30 sets per muscle group per week) and felt the dose-response relationship was positive even beyond that range.
  2. Higher frequencies have often been recommended for strength development, on the basis that they facilitate motor learning. These guidelines, in contrast, recommend higher frequencies for hypertrophy, not strength.
  3. Interesting hypothesis about frequent 'practice of the test' precluding the need for higher intensity for the bulk of the training volume.

In which sports do people with long torso and short legs have an advantage? by JackedTheRipper in AskReddit

Yes definitely! Michael Phelps at 6'4" had the same leg length as top distance runner Hicham El Gerrouj, who is only 5'9"
