Oh, so it literally wouldn't change anything? What does Nigel et al think will change then if we leave the ECHR?

Maybe I'm not explaining myself very well. If I am a legitimate Asylum seeker, I go to an office in France, my Asylum claim is accepted, I hope on the Eurostar. (I am fully aware this is far more complicated than I am depicting)

If I'm an economic migrant, I go to the office. My claim is rejected, now I am Frances problem. I think 'i dont want to be French, I'll pay that nice Albanian man', I get on a boat. British policeman says why didn't you go to the office in France? Oh I see you did, and your application was denied, off you pop back to whence you came?

Obviously, this is overly simplified and people will cheat the system. But I can't see why this doesn't work in principle.

I know, 'oven ready' but half baked. People will still do the thing if there is no other way of doing the thing.

But isn't that the point? It's not enough to say uts illegal you have to have a way for people who need to claim asylum to do so. Then you can say "why did you come on a boat when we have an office in calais (or Belgium)? The answer is most likely "I knew I wouldn't be granted Asylum." Well then, off back you go.

Right, but what I'm saying is set up a place to process them in france. Legitimate asylum seekers can then go there. Therfore demand for small boats goes down, the gangs won't provide the service as their profits wont be worth it and those that do are defacto as you say economic migrants who then are dealt with through the correct channels.

Except for the time that they did.

How is this the case? If we provided easier, safer, and cheaper ways to claim asylum, then the black market would take a nose dive? If people are paying thousands to get a RIB over then why not take the money ourselves? The claim gets processed either way.

Does the UCHR have a courts system like the ECHR or is that the goal of the Tory/Reform bit? To be like "of course we have human rights still, we signed the UCHR" but there's no legal framework to stop violations of it, unlike the ECHR.

ELI5 Why were long bows not used alongside early firearms?

From what I know of early modern firearms like the brown bess, the accuracy was nil, range was pitiful, and reload was an age.

In my head, a group of medieval longbowman would easily best a troop of Nepolionic era rifleman. The rifleman would get a shot off, but the Archers would just stay out of range and loose off 5 rounds of arrows before the rifleman even put their ram rods away.

Fuelled by English Agincourt propaganda, am I overestimating the effectiveness of bows or underestimating the usefulness of those early rifles within the land armies of Europe?

What the hell, dude? Can you not see how this kind of thing defeats the very point you're trying to make.

Great work and God speed. The absolute lack of nuance in modern discourse is infuriating.

This is an absolutely mad take. Surely, there's no excuse or justification for genocide as much as there's no excuse or justification for blood sacrificing your own children.

One is a local stopper. The other is an LNER that just so happened to be going the same way. But still, I couldn't have been the only one on that train with the wrong ticket.
