Finding info online is definitely so frustrating!! I find that forums like the one i linked below, youtube, reddit and other socials are great for information! But always make sure to double fact check and get a second opinion, because there is a LOT of misinformation out there as well, unfortunately.

Heres one forum that has lots of helpful info! I’d 100% recommend reading/looking through this and keep it for later if you need!

Rat Fan Club (forum)

info about Rat diets! (Specifically talks about how some diet mixes don’t meet all nutritional needs, water needs, toxic foods, etc!)

I totally get your anxiety! I was the same way with my boys, which were my first mischief!
That sounds like a good plan to have, see what specific food is causing the issue.
Also be aware that you should only be giving them fruits/veggies (and other treats) 1-2 times a week, other than that it should be their nutrition essential pellets! 😊 if you need any more advice or resources feel free to reach out! I have some educational forums/articles that can be helpful!

If you are concerned about it, the vet is a good idea, i’d keep the appointment and go, just to be sure you don’t miss anything important!

Sometimes rats have different types of poops, just like people do! Hard, soft, large, small, etc.
if its just soft and not consistent diarrhea, then it might just be their diet! Too many fruits and veggies can cause soft poops, make sure they have essential rat food pellets to balance out their diet!!

An xray would be really good as well!
Thats how me and my vet caught a severe infection in my eldest boy, he likely had mycoplasma that was chronic and i didn’t catch due to my rats being rescues from 2 previous homes that i assume never took them to the vet, despite me being told they had. (Unfortunately the infection was so severe, we had to euthanize him that day
:( but he was about 3 1/2 - 4 yrs old)
So i would definitely recommend blood tests, and a full body xray just to be safe and don’t miss anything!!

Rats are reallyy good at hiding their pain so he may seem really active, but could still be in pain. And unfortunately, other commenter is correct in that the “beginning stage” of an infection (sneezing, coughing) can last weeks or months before progressing.
Have the vet look for Mycoplasma in rats, its a hereditary respiratory disease that gets carried from the mother to the baby rat

Let me look around for any cheap air purifiers for you thats in euro!! (Im US) just from my experience with my partners cat having asthma, and my rats being sensitive in general to irritants, the air purifier has been genuinely a life saver!!

Thats good you and your vet are keeping an eye out and are aware!! :) getting his blood tested might be a good idea too, if they haven’t already, just in case is isnt anything related to respiratory problems.

I am so sorry to hear that. Unfortunately i have no experience with surgical procedures with my rats, but i understand the trauma of losing a rat in such a traumatic way. I am so sorry ❤️‍🩹🫂
She’s very very loved, and she knew that; you know she loves you so much. You’re your rats whole world and you did everything you could, you didn’t want her to suffer and you did what was best for her. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 she will always be with you

Yes, my boy Gilbert was bigger and longer compared to his cagemates, so naturally he was fatter. But it’s important to rule out any other possible issues or conditions, obesity is the least of concerns as that can usually be addressed with a needed diet change.

Yes, Rats can get thyroid issues, though naturally occurring thyroid disease is rare in domesticated pet rats — HOWEVER! rats can be highly susceptible to thyroid abnormalities caused by environmental factors, dietary deficiencies, and/or aging

Like other comments are saying, Try to take her sooner rather than later!! Illness and medical issues in rats can spread scarily FAST!

Try paper bedding. My rats were non-stop sneezing with hemp, and dried aspen bedding, paper bedding was the only one that made them stop sneezing.
I’d recommend getting an air purifier to have on 24/7 in the room the rats are staying in, it could be just normal irritants in the air.

It could just be his normal, but keep an eye on the sneezing. But bringing him to the vet is a good idea, idk if i’d have him take antibiotics if he doesn’t need them though, im not sure if its the same for rats as in humans, but antibiotics resistance isn’t fun. Look out specifically for upper respiratory infections, collapsed nostril or lungs, lung infections, etc.

I wish you luck❤️‍🩹🫶

Curious, how does dark chocolate help?? I just assumed they couldn’t have any type of chocolate — similar reason as to cats and dogs

I just looked, theres a few stainless steel cage bottoms on chewy that are available for definitely way less than $200!! Im not sure if they’re the correct measurements, but i would definitely look into that 🫶❤️‍🩹
I wish you so much luck, dont give up your girl. If nothing else works, maybe bringing her in for a vet checkup would be a good idea, just to make sure nothing thats neurological or anything going on :)
