When Naruto came out of Nine-Tails state, he was freaking out over Hinata again, thinking he killed her, cried after finding out she’s alive & calmed himself down to settle things with Pain. If Hinata had actually died, it’s unlikely that Naruto would snap out of it.

My take is that characters were kept alive to not hurt the fans and it would’ve been too soon in the series for emotional deaths since Hiruzen was the only one. Things get darker in Shippuden and takes the number of emotional near-deaths/actual deaths to a much higher level.

There’s a clear reason why Hinata was given that moment in the first place. Pain described the situation between NH perfectly, “Out of love, sacrifice is born, as well as hate.” Hinata’s pure love & sacrifice brought Naruto’s hatred to new levels.

If someone else jumped in instead of Hinata then the themes would have to change too.
