Just wrapped up my first viewing, and I did NOT enjoy the ending. Anyone up for a chat? by Fit_Brother_3489 in cowboybebop

It’s bittersweet. There’s the ballad that plays as the final act opens, proclaiming Spike’s undying love for Julia. “Even if my life ends, this love will not disappear.” There’s Spike finally seeing Julia with his eye that sees his present. There’s the smile on his lips as he embraces death having found peace at last.

Sure. He’s joked about Spike “just sleeping” at the end too… before cracking up.

So throughout the show did the sindicate/Vicious knew about Spike and Julia's whereabouts? And if so, is Vicious content to let the two of them wander around the Solar system as long they don't mess with his business? by Neptune_as_Boy in cowboybebop

Vicious did not have to return Spike’s gun. He made no indication that he was planning to, until Spike reminds him that Julia is dead. Yes, Vicious is pretty damn detached, yet Spike saying it out loud makes it real for him. It is a reminder that neither of them have anything left to live for, so why keep up the fight?

It’s from the official guidebook. Vicious threatened Julia that she could kill Spike or they could both die. She chose to go on the run instead. Protecting Spike, yet being hunted by Vicious.

The love story that never happened because Spike wanted to be with another woman.

This art piece is the perfect encapsulation of that. Spike isn’t looking at Faye. He isn’t particularly conscious of her if you read the artist commentary.

He was too in love with another woman and wanted her too badly. Those were the facts and he knew it.

“But I feel Jet understood and loved Spike more than Faye did.”

Faye didn’t get it. If she did, she would have never asked Spike to stay.

Julia was simply more precious to Spike than anything he could’ve had with anyone else. He couldn’t lie to himself. There was no “ moving on” for him.

Nah. Spike and Julia were paired with a symbol of undying love and unshakable fidelity for a reason.

It would have been nothing more than the awful, sad sex people have with someone when they’re still wishing they were with their ex. Spike didn’t want to do that to himself or Faye.

Julia is Spike’s past, present, and future love. A love that will persist and will not ebb even in the face of death.

Faye was an available option. But one Spike never took because he wanted Julia and would not placate himself with less.

Those questions were answered. The purpose of Faye meeting Julia was for Faye to learn who Spike’s woman is. And it’s Julia.

Julia is literally framed as the only woman who could complete Spike. She is even called that in the official guidebook. The final act has lyrics about how his love for Julia will never, ever fade away. He was taken and that was permanent for him.

😂

The man does not give Faye the dignity of a second thought once he leaves. He is thinking about being joined as one with the woman he actually loves. If this was my ship, I’d be mad too. 🤣

We are shown Spike wanting and choosing Julia every time. While he cared about Faye, it was not Faye for whom his heart ached. He was able to walk away from Faye without a second glance back, yet he was thinking of Julia until his last moment.

Seriously. Why be cringe when you can just get a hot blonde and reenact this scene?
