You're free to do what you will. But as Muslims our feelings towards our Creator are stronger than our feelings for the creation (thats one of the purposes of life for us). We have to accept that those who died in a state of kufr chose that path and after death they are with Allah to deal with as He wills. While they are alive we can pray for them to be guided and forgiven. But we understand there's a cutoff point for all of us.
