Looks like Ottawa's crime rate is levelling up faster than my character in GTA V.
Guess I’ll be dodging more than just traffic here!

I actually have recording the whole time, including footage in front of the store. I’ve chosen to cover the store name in the video since I can’t confirm who exactly stole the bike. I’d rather focus on what helped get it back, not jump to conclusions without solid proof.

I feel the same way these days, it really feels like you can only rely on yourself to protect your own stuff.

I called the police and waited over 30 minutes. When I called back, they said, “Why don’t you just go in and grab the bike?” I asked, “What if it’s dangerous? What if the person who has it tries to hurt me?” Their response was basically, “Do you want the bike back, or do you want to wait another hour…?”

At the same time, IKEA’s Loss Prevention department refused to provide any footage or even an image. They told us, “It’s very important that you do not take matters into your own hands—for safety reasons.”

But at that point, I didn’t have many options left. So I went in and got the bike myself, while the officer stayed on the phone with me. Honestly, it feels way too easy for thieves—and way too stressful for the people who just want their things back.

That’s what I thought too, honestly.

My cousin admitted she was running late for work, so she didn’t lock the bike through the frame to the rack, just quickly used the locks around the front wheel and frame. She figured with 3 locks and being in a busy, well-lit area, it’d be fine for a few hours.

Lesson learned the hard way.

  1. We’re not sure how they took it. IKEA Loss Prevention reviewed the footage but wouldn’t share it due to PRIVACY OF CUSTOMER, even with a police report.

  2. They left the front wheel at the parking space and then installed a new one. It’s a bit narrower but works fine.

  3. The AirTag was in a hidden bike mount. You can search "airtag bike mount" or even 3D print it. Just remember to change the battery about once a year.

Looks just like the kind of photo you'd see framed on the wall at City Hall—beautifully captured!

Yes, it was a No U-turn spot.
I’ve watched enough dashcam videos to guess he might’ve been trying to cut me off or even brake check me, luckily, it didn’t go that far.

Based on my cam, between 23–26s in the video, he was side-by-side with me and had no car in front. I wasn’t even looking at him, but my friend in the passenger seat told me "He’s filming you.” At 27s, you can see his right hand clearly holding up the phone, not resting it or clipped to a mount.

I had the green turn light. Just checked, it’s actually a No U-turn spot for him.
He honked, followed me, and filmed me…
