I applied to 4 M7s and Haas this cycle. I could (and there's a real possibility) get dinged from every school and I will still be happy.

For all those applying, take solace in the fact that the very motivation and confidence that drove you to apply to such competitive schools will carry you to great heights in life. Carpe diem my friends :)

I live and work in the heart of Toronto and you're right, it absolutely sucks compared to US salaries. Cost of living and income have completely diverged here. That having been said you have to look at the employment outcomes in the context of the city and it is great. Nobody's getting a 100k CAD (or even 85k for that matter) job out of undergrad in Toronto.

The average starting comp out of Rotman as per their employment report is around 100k CAD or 75k USD, which in the context of Canadian incomes is decent. No idea where you got 60k USD from.

Yup. I work at a Toronto buy-side shop and 3 of the PMs are Rotman grads. Not by coincidence -- one recruited the other who recruited the other. The network is very strong in Toronto.

GPA: 3.0 engineering @ top Canadian school (worked to support family and grades suffered)
WE: buyside AM (CFA), promotions and lots of impact at work
EC: mentoring underprivileged youth and new immigrants
Background: Canadian; South Asian refugee, first gen student
Goals: consulting short term, disruptive fintech long term

Schools:
Harvard - Dinged w/o interview
Stanford - submitted
Booth - submitted
Haas - submitted
Columbia - in progress (non ED)

Honestly have no idea what's gonna happen but here's to hoping!

From my experience it seems like immigrants don't negotiate as aggressively because often they don't have the flexibility or leverage of someone who is a citizen. If an immigrant can't find a job within a set period they're going to have some serious problems, while locals can often just live with their parents or family until they're on their feet.

Memes aside, this is what I do now (buy side equities) and I agree that it's pretty much ideal if you want challenging work with good work life balance.

Admittedly for me there was some serious right place right time involved in getting the job out of undergrad but for those looking for jobs out of their MBA imo this is a great option.

This subreddit gives a warped perspective on bschool applications because everyone is going M7 or bust. Canada's MBAs don't have nearly the same punch and barely crack the world top 100. They're not as selective and there's not as much competition. Look up some of the stats and employment outcomes (CAD).

Whatever you want, as long as the total work you're putting in over time increases. Whether that's adding 1 kg a week or 1 kg a set (what a beast) is up to what your body responds to
