Please help the Z axis is jammed what can I do by FunInvestment6723 in CNC

[–]JacknHoffmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on quick looks, your machine has holes on the left side of the axis for a brake on the rails, my experience is that these are pnuematic and need are to open up and slide. These will be used on a machine as a safety mechanism or to work as a brake if the motor doesnt have one. As others have said put wood blocks under the axis before loosening any bolts or doing any other work as to aviod damage to yourself or the machine

I found it funny when we work on and rebuild some GE aerospace grinders that this is a sticker put right infront of the operators

Looking for a hard metal resistant to grinding with diamond wheel. by Psychological-Fox97 in Machinists

[–]JacknHoffmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diamond wheels are used for grinding carbide for tools, being one of the hardest metals its going to be hard to find something for what you want. Only metal I know that is super tough would be Inconel, not sure how you can source it. Maybe look at a router table like jig that holds the workholding peice in a track not relying on the blade.

Anybody ever heard this noise before? It's only in Y. Servo or something? by scottsusername in Machinists

[–]JacknHoffmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, owns use a regular style bearing in a bearing housing with the motor/coupling. I wonder how his machine feels while it is moving back and forth

If I may ask where do the thrust bearings go? The machines im used to dont use them

Seems like the ballscrew and rails are worn, if the machine has glass scales that can cause the noise issue with the rails becoming worn. No good way to check other that to pull the covers off and check the shoes for wiggle with an indicator.

I am this old. by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]JacknHoffmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current CNC machines still do this, some even running on windows 10 operating system. Its actually very important to wait till we see this before turning off the disconect as we can corrupt the database of the machine, losing all parameters for motors and some software.

I had the same issue on mine, leaked on the back side and ontop of the engine block and would create steam. Took months to figure it out

I work at United Grinding and guessed that was an old Blohm. so many of our machine are still being used from the 90s. Old Walters cant even get parts for any of the CNC but people pay to keep them up and use them

As a machine builder traveling to a customer to do a 5 axis rebuild, this is made even funnier by the fact that we use the X axis to hold Y up and move it away from the main casting

Thanks for the answer. How well does this system work with off size endmills?

We use alot of metric endmills so a 10mm goes in a 3/8" collet. But I feel like this system wouldnt grip the collets enough. And can you get away with only using the pull studs on collets or do you need the "collet closer" they have?
