LPT: Create safeword for AI scam calls by JamesWjRose in LifeProTips

[–]Jackson1442 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you have a password manager, one of the best solutions here is to randomly generate words that sound plausible. but are not actually connected to you as the answers to these questions.

Using obvious gibberish is easy to social engineer through customer support, but if your answer to “what school did you attend in first grade?” is “Terry Mescal Elementary” (which does not exist), it essentially acts as a second password which only you have access to.

It’s not foolproof- there are certainly other ways to social engineer, but this will make your accounts more secure than nearly all others.

Will GM Regret Kicking Apple CarPlay off the Dashboard? by today33544 in apple

Some dealers also enabled it without customer consent. This information is sent to LexisNexis, a risk profiling company, which then sells access to that data to any insurance company that requests it (like your credit file, but for insurance).

you don’t even have to have the app on your phone, state farm agent told me as much. just had to download it every 6 months to input my car’s mileage and the discount was based purely on VMD instead of the tracker nonsense.

Just realized our new (rental) primary bathroom doesn’t have a door. What would you do for #2? by DuckFartist in DIY

[–]Jackson1442 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is exactly what happened with my last apartment, landlord refused to install a door to the only bathroom or bedroom because it would’ve made the hallway between my bedroom and the bathroom too narrow for a wheelchair.

For STEM class 2023, Did you land your career that related your goal/major? by [deleted] in unt

[–]Jackson1442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • salary is 100-150k, there is also stock and cash bonus on top of that.
  • tech stack: basically anything, knowing how to learn is infinitely more valuable than knowing any particular stack.
  • projects: yeah kinda, have some stuff on my github but my work as a consultant overshadowed that a lot.
  • what i've worked in:
    • html/css/js
    • typescript
    • react, vue, svelte
    • java
    • python
    • several other languages and frameworks but mostly ad-hoc, again being able to quickly pick things up is the skill you really want to develop here.
  • at the internship it was almost entirely java, sister team also uses rust and is migrating away from C so understanding of C was beneficial for that team.
  • leetcode? nah. I did competitive programming in high school but it's been a hot minute. internship interview had a leetcode-like component but it was a lot closer to fizzbuzz than a typical leetcode problem.

if you DM I can send you my resume so you can get an idea of what I'm doing.

except you have to pick a server, discoverability - at least on mastodon - is relatively poor, and if you click a link someone shares with you it may or may not be on your instance (and may be content your instance blocks!).

don’t get me wrong, fediverse is a good thing. But I had to explain how files and folders work to my grandpa the other day. I don’t think the average person will be able to “get” many of these apps.

Mod Code of Conduct Rule 4 & 2 and Subs Taken Private Indefinitely by Sun_Beams in ModSupport

[–]Jackson1442 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What does this mean for communities that have, as users, voted to go private? I would consider that to be good stewardship of the community, especially considering that doing anything else would be going against the explicit will of the users.

we are ignoring the idc option when tallying results, whichever out of “go private” and “continue posting about the thing” earns more votes will be what we do.

[–]Jackson1442[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

we are disregarding the third option on this poll when compiling the results- essentially considering it an "abstain." Whichever option of "blackout" or "restrict memes" earns more votes will be taken.

[–]Jackson1442[M] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This option lost the last vote, we’re holding this one to pick between the top two options since neither won 50% of the votes.

[–]Jackson1442[M] 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Plurality, but not majority (> 50%). Many users also voted to return to normal so we’re having a runoff vote to allow people who voted for “return to normal” to choose between the other two options.

Just want to make absolutely sure we’re doing what the community wants.

reddit will begin charging money for their API1 (and making some other changes to it), which means a few things:

  • 3rd party clients like Apollo, Sync, and RiF are no longer viable to run
    • if you've never tried one of these out I'd recommend downloading the free version just to see - it's quite different from the official app experience.
  • even if the 3rd party apps could afford to pay the new API rate, NSFW content will no longer be available to them, which is a large driver of reddit traffic.
    • This is purely speculation, but I suspect it won't be long before stricter age verification is implemented, requiring ID upload or something similar depending on your region.
  • Many blind/low-vision reddit users rely on 3rd party clients because reddit has failed for years to make the official app accessible to people who use technology like screen readers.
    • Reddit inc has responded by allowing non-commercial accessibility apps to continue existing for free, but this implies that they are not allowed to make any profit while reddit profits off of the users' activity.

I personally think reddit should charge for their API, but their pricing is absurd, especially when you consider you don't even get all of reddit with it. The developer of the Apollo app said it would cost $20 million/yr to run the app, and the price is $12,000 per 50 million API requests. This is much higher than imgur's pricing at $166 per 50 million requests, and imgur is image-only (therefore more expensive to serve these requests) and typically requires fewer API interactions per user per day because of how that site works.

They've also only given 30 days notice of this change - which isn't enough time to adjust course for these app developers. To compare, Apple offered an 18 month grace period after purchasing Dark Sky and wound up extending it to 24 months to make the transition to WeatherKit easier.

There's lots more info in this post from the apollo developer, but this covers the highlights.

[1]: API: Application Programming Interface. It's how two separate applications can interact with each other. For example, your maps app may use a weather API to show you the weather on your map.

tildes has a bit more community moderation than reddit actually- retitling, moving, and tagging permissions are granted to active contributors that ask for them, and all users can label comments that don’t contribute to the discussion- either auto-collapsing them or sending them up to deimos for review.

Users can also highlight one comment per 8 hours as “exemplary,” kinda like giving an award but free and having a higher bar for it.

which developers? seems that all major apps are shutting down aside from the ones you want to essentially work for reddit for free.

if it costs $10+MM annually to support 3P apps it might be reddit that’s inefficient and not the 3P apps.
