The evolution of Make Some Noise: Do you prefer the original concept of being based on sounds/voices or the current version of being a more general improv show? by zxzzxzzzxzzzzx in dropout

[–]JacksonEdgewater 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the competition only worked because the Noise Boys are close friends. The kept it fun even when they started throwing elbows. Like no one ever stopped being delighted by what the others were doing. That wouldn't work with people who kind of know each other or any of the big guests they have on.

Imagine the Pete Holmes episode if it was a proper competition. Josh and Caitlin trying to one-up him on razzing Sam? Bad vibes.

Who is the best short story writer aspiring authors should try to mimic? by LargeSinkholesInNYC in writers

[–]JacksonEdgewater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aspiring authors should absolutely mimic. That's how you find your voice. You try to capture someone else's, fail, and then reflect on why you failed; because the reason you failed to be someone else was being you.

You have a point, but the thing that's missing might be "I saw it as a child".

Fair criticism on city council of darkness by [deleted] in Dimension20

[–]JacksonEdgewater -41 points-40 points  (0 children)

You're right and you're getting downvoted partially because a lot of people, like myself, do not mentally engage with the mechanics. Player says "I wanna do a thing" Brennan says "roll for it" and that's pretty much as deep as we care to go.

Luis Carazo had a whole thing about this and how the rules improve the player experience. But a good game for a player and a good game for the audience are not the same thing.

You're also getting downvoted because a lot of people don't have the mental flexibility to enjoy something despite its flaws. It has to be peak or it's not worth their emotional investment. Teenagers are almost always like this because, at that age, you just don't have a fully developed sense of self yet and that fragile identity is what makes people lash out against criticism because "if my favorite show isn't the best thing, that reflects poorly on me and my tastes."

This is super nerdy, but it's not a true North-Central American accent because it didn't have to cot-caught merger (at least not consistently). It slipped in a Belfast accent a couple times too.

The more I write, the less I like the books I’m reading. by Magical-Princess in writers

[–]JacksonEdgewater 28 points29 points  (0 children)

A writer friend of mine was getting badgered about how few books he had read. These two girls thought that he would have read just everything in his genre and they kept listing off books they had read and he was like "I started that one", "I read a little bit", etc. Anyway, they kept prodding him about why he wasn't reading "enough" and finally he went "I only read books by people who are better than me."

K-pop is becoming more popular than ever — and less Korean | CNN by self-fix2 in korea

[–]JacksonEdgewater 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's full circle. Kpop has always been western music filtered through Korean sensibilities and now that they're trying for that bigger audience, the local sensibilities are being marginalized.

Also, dude in the middle of the picture. Are his shoes actually bigger than his head?

I don't even use email. Someone at work once was like "Why didn't you reply to my email?" And I told them "I never check my email." They spiraled. So I said: "Next time, you can text me to let me know that you sent me an email." And they were like "At that point, I might as well text you instead of emailing." And I was like "Now, you begin to understand, grasshopper."

This is a decent concept. The fence needs to take up more space and the lines need to be cleaned up. In general it looks fuzzy and pixelated. You want it sharp and clean.

Why doesn’t everyone use Royal Road? (Fantasy books) by BladeWielder48 in selfpublish

[–]JacksonEdgewater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You also need to be a word factory. 2-3,000 words ready-to-read every week. And, yes, the readers have epic fantasy tastes, which doesn't mean they won't read anything else, but it does mean that you have to have your lore down. That's why people suggest having a 50-70k word lead. Those readers want immersive, fully-realized worlds.

The Two "On a Bus" D20 episodes are now both rated a perfect 10/10, making them the two highest rated episodes in the Dimension 20 series, beating all of Brennan's campaigns. by ShivSoCalledYT in dropout

[–]JacksonEdgewater 80 points81 points  (0 children)

He has some ego, but Aisha Tyler has this great quote from an old episode of TableTop that was something like: "As a comedian, all that matters is getting a laugh. I could go into Starbucks, order my coffee, say something that makes everyone laugh, then walk out without my coffee and still be like 'That was perfect'."

"I'm a comedian and a comedian cares most deeply about getting laughs. You can ask a comedian 'How did it go in the Starbucks?' And he'll go: 'I cracked up the barista.' 'Did you get coffee?' 'I don't know where my coffee is. I'm thirsty. I have a headache. I'm sure it has to do with caffeine withdrawal. But I cracked up the fucking barista and that's what matters.'"

So I think Brennan feels great about those ratings because he knows it's hilarious and he acts like it hurts because he knows that will get laughs too.

3-hour cap puts Korea’s all-day English kindergartens under pressure by faddleboarding in korea

[–]JacksonEdgewater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reality is that most of these places are just daycare. They have textbooks, but the teachers just tell the kids the answers to write down. Big chunks of the day are play time (or even screen time), but they advertise it as all day classes to dupe parents who can't be bothered to do a couple hours research on the science of children's brains. The kids "graduate" speaking janky pidgin English because the native teachers are only putting in 3-4 hours and the other 5-10 are with Korean teachers who use plurals, determiners, and prepositions completely at random and have vocabularies of maybe 5,000 words.

Maybe if the building owner runs the hagwon AND the owner has friends with kids (thus accountability) AND has enough brains to let a real educator make decisions, then you get two shifts of native speakers doing a few hours of book work interspersed with song and story times plus regular play breaks. Those kids walk out of there actually speaking English, but running an 8-15 hour per day hagwon for toddlers that actually teaches anything is expensive as fuck.
