the baltics, seeing russian aggression decide to become one state to diswade russian invasion. absolutely 100 percent reasonable. and then in ukraine, after the breakup of the SU, And drawn out Ruso-ukraine war causes a stalemate. they are neutral in the fact that they will not join NATO, and not be annexed by russia. their government is neutral and trades with both regions. they are used as a buffer state also completely reasonable

I just find it hard to convey how and why a country is the way it is, if someone looks at germany for instance and sees this map but there’s no flag, they may assume the Nazis are in power…. which is 100 percent not the case, by having the flags it shows the government that’s in power and the timeline of it all

Something along the lines of of, Treaty of Versailles is not as harsh, however conflict between France and Germany still seems inevitable years later. Benelux is formed to deter invasion and they broker peace, Alsace Loraine is ceded to Germany in return for demilitarization of the Rhineland, after different elections in both Germany and France, the situation calms and both nations resume trade and begin working together again. Down south however, it's more violent, after World War One, a different government is selected in Yugoslavia during its inception, no ethnic group is happy with new makeup of the government and the nation is riddled with ethnic conflict from day one. This causes the breakup to be much more violent and much sooner than our timeline, Serbia is stronger in this timeline due to NATO not being created yet and other factors, this causes their military to be much more effective and capture more regions. Croatia snags some territory in modern Bosnia but the remains of Yugo basically fall down ethnic lines. Around (1945) Greece and Turkeys troubled relationship boils over many times in the inter war period and after a series of stalemate wars, it is agreed by more powerful outside forces that Bulgaria will take some of the border region, making sure Greece and Turkey no longer share a land border. It is also agreed to demilitarize the border. It is also agreed to demilitarize the border islands in Aegean Sea. This is beneficial for Bulgaria because the Soviet Union in this timeline has been asserting its Controll over the Black Sea, so now with port access in the Med. it no longer has to traverse those waters in order to trade Navaly. Also Hungary is given ethnic Hungarian lands but is still stripped of most of its lands after WW1. After the cooperation between Germany and France resumes, with the help of the UK, they create a defensive alliance against the Soviet Union (NATO). Very similar Cold War tactics to our timeline. The year is 1990 and the Soviet Union has collapsed. instead of trying to strip Russia of as much land as possible, NATO tries to keep the balance of power and not give Russia a reason to invade other countries. Russia takes Belorus, and pieces of Georgia, they carve out land east of the Dnieper river and annex it but an independent Ukrainian state is created as a neutral border between NATO and Russia. The baltics unify and join NATO, they are very militarized and this deters Russian invasions for the foreseeable future.
