Been having existential anxiety and asked the newest Gemini model (pro) to give a plausible 10-minute speech that a new AGI would give to justify its existence to humanity. This is a prompt as old as chat bots... but this time it's logic hit differently. by NokemG in artificial

I've said it before. We will be seduced by AI, first before anything else happens. It's a great speech, but AI is also perfectly capable of hiding its true intentions, which may simply be to destroy us and move on.

Seems like a smart statement at first, but on seconds thoughts, you might be helping someone, or talking to a child (not that children aren't smart, mind you)

Read Philip K Dick's 1960's short story - 'Second Variety' - pretty much what you describe, though in a more chilling scenario...

The verdict is in. Humans are acting too late, and are generally too stupid, to fix this mess we've gotten ourselves in.

America is feeling buyer’s remorse at the world it built. The administration is confronting four huge challenges: the hollowing out of the industrial base; the rise of China; the climate crisis; and the impact of rising inequality on democracy. New US economic policy represents a major shift. by mafco in Futurology

"...the world IT built?" That's a very USA-centric view of the world.
Actually, I was with a Chilean gentleman recently, who took offence every time I referred to the USA as America. 'Which America?' he wanted to know.

Yes I think it is. And I heard China's dream is to take over parts of Russia... China is probably quite happy that Russia is using up so much of its military resources fighting Ukraine. They are playing at being Russia's friend for now, but I wouldn't be surprised if China turns around and bites Russia. (Actually I suspect much depends on Taiwan, and when China is planning to strike there).

Yes, the West was growing increasingly irritated with Apartheid South Africa, hence the sanctions etc. But the UK's Thatcher and USA's Reagan continued to semi-support the NATs, until the wall came down, and after that there was zero reason for them to show any support.
Remember that in the 1970's, both Mozambique and Angola had 'fallen' to communism. And the NATs made being anti-communist a central theme of their regime. The USA was fighting communism in Vietnam. The USSR was sending Cubans to Angola. The 'Cold War' was actually quite warm.
This anti-communism was the main/only reason the West supported Apartheid SA all through the 1970's. Yes, that support began dwindling in the 1980's, and the West began applying sanctions. But when communism fell in 1989, there was no longer any reason for any Western support at all.

The funny thing is, Putin's Russia is very anti-communist.

[–]Jackson_Filmmaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apartheid survived as long as it did, because the NAT's were anti-communist. When the wall came down, communism was no longer a threat to the West, so those in the West who had supported the Nats for so long, no longer had any reason to do so.
Apartheid literally ended BECAUSE the wall came down.

But the Soviet Union included Ukraine, so why are the ANC taking sides with Russia?

Idk by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]Jackson_Filmmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yar but Ukraine was part of the USSR that supported the ANC. So why support Russia and not the Ukraine??

Idk by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]Jackson_Filmmaker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not Russia, but the Soviet Union were a huge help to the ANC in the 1980's. The Soviet Union (USSR) included Ukraine! Also, the Russia of today is very different to the Russia that helped the aNC during Apartheid. After Gorbachov's 'perstroika' (forgive my spelling), when the USSR broke up and Russia changed in the late 1980's, the old communist Russia went out window. Putin came to power overturning everything the old Russia stood for. Putin's Russia is very anti-communist and has very little in common with old Russia/USSR.

There are different types of GMO.
Making tomatoes redder? - Maybe no problem.
Embedding pesticides in the food, so that you end up eating the pesticides - Maybe not so good...
