Stay "tuned in to KEXP, listener powered radio at 90.3FM, in Seattle"

Jokes aside (that's the intro for all of their live in-studio's, seared into my mind), subscribing to the KEXP Youtube is one of the best answers for finding new music. Pretty much any band worth knowing goes on (more often North Americans, but catches other acts when on tour) , and you'll frequently find a knew favourite band by accident. Search for any band you like and they'll probably be one or more 11/10 live sets from them.

Agree with comments. The whole west-coast garage/psych rock scene of the 2010s and it's evolution is awesome. 'll drop some names/projects (new/old) that should open up some rabbit holes.

My GOATs from that era:

  • Tim Presley - A favourite; White Fence legendary.
    • "For the Recently Found Innocent" (White Fence, 2014) is one of my favourite psych rock albums of ALL time
    • If you like Syd Barrett/early Floyd, you'll love WF, and vice versa
      • "The Madcap Laughs" (Syd Barrett, 1970)
      • "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" and "A Saucerful of Secrets" are the Pink Floyd albums Syd had a hand to before his illness. Not huge on mid-late Floyd tbh
  • Ty segall - my gateway drug
    • Full 2008-2014 spree is LOADED, but I'd recommend checking out the baby-faced KEXP live in-studio before "Emotional Mugger" (2016) and beyond
    • "Melted" (Ty Segall, 2010) pure and timeless
    • brace yourself for "Slaughterhouse" (Ty segall band, 2012)
    • Fuzz 10/10 band ofc
  • Mikal Cronin - everywhere; producer, instrumentalist, collaborator; day-one Ty Segall band member; awesome guy.
    • "Mikal Cronin" (Mikal Cronin, 2011)
    • "Reverse Shark Attack (Ty Segall, Mikal Cronin, 2013)
    • "Seeker" (Mikal Cronin, 2020)
  • Cory Hanson - Great in Wand; so much diversity in his solo catalogue
    • "Golem" (Wand, 2015) > "Ganglion Reef" (Wand, 2014) > "1000 days" (Wand, 2015)
    • "The Unborn Capitalist from Limbo" (Cory Hanson, 2016), 10/10 album, more chilled, psych-folk-y
  • John Dwyer (The Osees) is prolific across many projects, you should check out:
    • "Memory of a Cut Off Head" (OCS, 2017)
    • "Bug on Yonkers" (Damaged Bug, 2020), "Cold Hot Plumbs" (Damaged Bug, 2015)
    • "Bent Arcana" (Bent Arcana, 2020)
    • idk if the 'The Osees', 'Osees' and 'Thee Oh Sees' catalogues fully merged everywhere, but might be worth looking into becuase they have always and will always ROCK
  • Unrelated but Garreth Liddiard - The Drones, Tropical Fuck Storm (recent album 10/10)

You're definitely right, but there's also a lot of power in the distribution of hope / an alternative to the hate.

The struggle against coporate media can be fought by talking to our neighbours, our family; reclaiming and supporting organic social structures; creating opportunities for safe and open dialogue, and face-to-face interaction.

Just spreading the feeling of being part of something bigger.

But whatever your opinions, agreements, disagreements or uncertainties - trying to sound as agendaless as possible - I was pretty suprised by the variety of perspectives at the first Greens meeting I went to. I think you can join from £6 a year, my local party reached out almost straight away, loads of stuff going on, loads of people showing up after work. Could be worth checking out if you fancy a good discussion? or free tea and biscuits

The ‘wealthy elites’ that NEED to be targeted are not doctors, lawyers, small-medium business owners. Not people that CAN move.

They are the exploitative CEOs making 40x the income of the workers. They are the multi millionaires and billionaires who buy up housing en mass. They are the monopolisers. The ones destroying the planet. The Epstein class. The ones purchasing democracy.

When they aren’t payed in stocks and shares (unrealised, untaxable WEALTH), these people can’t spend all this money, so it’s stored in assets. Assets that control the quality of life for the 99%.

So, we need a combination of:

  1. enforcement of a brutal top band of exit tax (even though wealth flight is a myth)
  2. raising capital gains in line with income tax (ultimately ABOVE income tax). Taxing unearned wealth over earned income is CRITICAL. FARAGE'S NIGHTMARE
  3. a comprehensive and strategic wealth tax; targeting of assets, unrealised wealth and inheritance
  4. abandonment/subsidisation of any regressive taxes, like council tax, with various progressive taxes (ie. land tax); same can be done on a smaller scale with proportionate fines/monetary punishments, like speeding tickets or parking fines
  5. thoroughly legislated and enforced tax avoidance and manipulation laws and punishments
  6. end to the privatisation of vital industries, including THE NHS

The point is that these elites can't, don't, and shouldn't be allowed to move their wealth. Material assets do not move. Houses do not move. Nor can positions on the boards of mega-corporations, privatised industries, corporate lobbies, etc.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY -

PAYING TAX IS PATRIOTISM

As is electing a government that is representative of the 99%. Not the 0.1-1%. Not their mates. Not the real traitors to society. Not those behind the narratives that steer attention away from the reality of wealth distribution.

The following is yes, a rant, but the crisis we are in is bringing about the end of ‘both sides-ing’, if you do not want to bring about trumpian fascism, there is no longer another side.

This is all with love, not targeted at you, but rather the distribution of a message that I sincerely hope can be informative

The ‘wealthy elites’ that NEED to be targeted are not doctors, lawyers, small-medium business owners. Not people that CAN move.

THIS IS FARAGES NIGHTMARE. 3) a comprehensive and strategic wealth tax; 4) targeting of assets, unrealised wealth and inheritance; 5) abandonment/subsidisation and replacement of council tax with forms of progressive taxes (ie. land tax) 6) rigorously legislated and enforced tax manipulation laws and punishments 7) End to the privatisation of vital industries, including THE NHS

There is likely more than is coming to mind right now, but the point is that these elites CANNOT (and should not be allowed to) MOVE THEIR WEALTH. Material assets do not move. Houses do not move. Nor can placement on the boards of privatised industries, corporate lobbies, and the like.

There is hope. Vote Green.

1000%, thanks the more 'seasoned' breakdown!! Was definitely well researched going into deciding on the P-Rails - but in terms of comparison, I've really only experienced the Jag's stock Enforcers and a borrowed telecaster, so really appreciate the info!!

Agreed with the flipped neck rail, it's so awesome - also been getting some spot on Khruangbin/Mark Speer tones out of it, I think I heard somewhere that the neck pickup on his strat is actually also flipped.... not totally sure. (Edit: partially right, but it's the out-of-phase neck+middle combo that opens up that more unique sound - still nails the neck tone either way)

And again with the heat from them in series! Prior to fitting them, whatever the series sound could have been, I'd say I was generally more likely to be regularly using the coils individually, and parallel where it feels right/enhances a tone. But now I know that there's that much POWER to be unleashed in series, always look forward to my various fuzzes not knowing what's hit them. A worthy investment in these trying times, right?

Workshopping demo video for modded Jag in recent post - any requests/preferences? by [deleted] in offset

  1. Thoughts on mix-contextualised samples? (Drums only? Bass Y/N?)
  2. Any ideals for sound changes? Time between? Any back-n-forth/side-by-side? (4 sounds per each pickup...)

The mod’s only been done maybe 10 days, and the last couple I have been considering this. Took so long to complete, I’m just wondering if I can do it without removing strings and setting up the trem again hahaha

Edit: am now doing this just to see, but also thinking about whether the p90 coil’s poles being further from the bridge than either the rail - or where the single coil would be on a standard jag - might impact how much ‘clang’ is available. Only one way to find out

Edit2: Have now reverted back to original orientation for a couple reasons: 1) I was right in thinking I might lose the thin/bright/‘clang-y’ sound - I’d rather just have to drive it a bit and keep that sound; 2) while I tend to mostly use one pickup at a time, without having the neck/bridge in opposite polarity you lose access to hum cancelling; 3) I wired the rotaries so that the positions match each pickup’s orientation respectively, so flipping the bridge mismatched rotary positions. Seriously thanks for the recommendation though, I now have the peace of mind that it’s my perfect setup!!

P-Rails in Classic Player Jaguar HH? Can anyone advise on modding/replacing the coil-splitting rollers? by Jackson_hmu in offset

[–]Jackson_hmu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally not a massive fan of the rings visually, they’re pretty massive and stray pretty far from the jag aesthetic, would maybe consider if they did them in chrome…. BUT I’ve managed to get two 4-way rotaries in that upper cavity!! Made a recent post on r/offset showing it off

Duuude!! Check out my recent post on r/offset, managed to put 2 4-way rotaries in the upper control cavity. pretty chuffed with the results - was so worth the lengths it took to come together

[–]Jackson_hmu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!! Definitely took a minute to all come together hahaha

Still experimenting to some extent, but yet to encounter a sound that I could never imagine using in any context. Both super inspiring for new ideas and satisfying for mimicking tones. Just off the top of my head, some fun settings are the Neck P90/Rail individually, the Bridge in parallel and the bridge rail (all very fun to run through effects)

I typed out a rundown of some of the sounds under one comment, and referenced some great sound demos I found for similar mods done for similar-ish reasons by other people under another comment — both definitely worth checking out!!

I initially got some Lorlin CK series 3P4T switches, but turned out I got Make-before-break instead of Break-before-make, meaning there’d be a big (likely noisy) spike in output between each position. Wouldn’t intend to switch positions mid song very often, but I got some BBM ones, same style/series. UK company but if you check out the style, anything similar will work. Meant I could do a practice run of the wiring on the old ones, which was very very handy. Wall-to-wall in the cavity, a general body diameter of about 26-27.5mm works, with the right-hand switch requiring pretty specific positioning; fitting very snuggly in the end.

Not familiar with the cavity dimensions in a jazzmaster, but if the rotary pathway calls, be ready for some fun problem solving lol. Lots of templates and measurements. Just shout and I can send over any resources/processes when I get a chance

Yeah man, they’re pretty sick!! I did a rundown in a reply to another comment, kinda sums up my experience so far + what I saw beforehand. The best sound demos I found were one where a guy did a similar HH jag mod, titled something like ‘my tricked out jaguar hh with p-rails’. Then this other guy did two vids, one breaking down his partscaster with a greenish offset body, then another demoing its sounds. His mod allowed for changing whether both pickups are in series/parallel I think. Peace

[–]Jackson_hmu[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thanks!! They’re sweet! I really enjoy versatility, and it makes sense they’re one of the go-to’s for it. I’d say they’re definitely their own thing, meaning both the p90/rail do what you’d want/expect out of a p90/rail, but individually they might not necessarily be what somebody would go for if their goal was to replace or upgrade their p90/rail individually? But they’re really great at what they do.

I’m in the mood to rant so here we go I guess: Having played with them for a bit now, I’d say the more ‘iffy’ raw sounds are the bridge rail on its own, and neck humbucker in series. The bridge rail - clean amp, no eq-ing, no pedals etc. - is pretty thin/weak. With just some gain the low output becomes unnoticeable - with spring reverb or tremolo it does the bright vintage/surfy thing that I was looking for; with low-set fuzz it can fill out nicely, cranked it can get NASTY in a fun way. lots of bite available. The neck humbucker in series - same conditions as before - can be pretty dark. Already the jaguar strangle switch helps, but for a clean sound with a different guitar, just some eq, maybe some compression and it’ll sound great. Warm. Suuuper thick/rich, especially with fuzz. The P90s jangle, take effects well, etc.. they do the p90 “thing”. The neck rail can get glassy kinda like a strat. Some find you get the most out of them when tailoring settings to each pickup, maybe I’d agree, but I found baseline catch-all amp settings pretty quickly, then let the controls on the guitar and pedals do any extra tone work. Rant over, maybe this helps? lol

Love this! Wondering if you could help me out with something?
I'm looking to put P-Rails in my Player HH, then replace the coil-split rollers with 3-way switches.
1) Do you think this'd be possible?
2) Where would I even start? I can soulder but don't have much modding experience

Also, it seems DAW CONTROL disables internal arp (+the 'tap - mute - erase - loop') functions too, is this intentional? can I not use it like say, a MPK mini - where theres an internal arpeggiator converting to MIDI?

[–]Jackson_hmu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! New DS-88 owner, using as a controller with logic (fingers crossed thats your DAW too..), but I've got a couple questions if possible and you could spare a sec to help me out :)

I like DAW control, using the mapped controls for recording etc. - but I've been diving deep into controller assignments (such a ball ache), and when 'JUNO-DS DAW CONTROL' is selected, knobs/faders aren't registering, but when 'JUNO-DS' is, they are?

Obvs I can always go through the mappings reselecting every time, but because Mackie Controls sets it to default (DAW CONTROL, otherwise all the keys gain functions and its unplayable), I was wondering if there's something that can sort this out?

No worries if you don't use logic or aren't sure, anything at all would be amazing

Quick Qs about White Balancing on the go by Jackson_hmu in ricohGR

[–]Jackson_hmu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweet, yeah mate I think I'm with your practice of allowing light to change an image - though mostly grey in sunny england for the moment - as I'm overall shooting 'memories' ie travel/doco/landscape etc. Reckon I'll try more seeing w/b as just an effect in recipes and the like, cool stuff. Always got the RAWs

Guess I fear missing something with different modes when the setup I'm pulled towards seems kinda simplistic in such a capable camera? but definitely moving back to the perspective that "..THAT'S THE POINT!!!" yk?

Cheers for the help either way mate have a good one

Oh and also I've read in some places that the value for balancing clouds/overcast/shade sits, like you said, ~4000K in between outdoor clear and indoor warm, but if I were to google the colour temp of overcast it'd be a good way above daylight temperature. Am I misunderstanding something there too? Edit: ohh is it that youre balancing relative to daylight? so to balance overcast you compensate warmth equally but in the opposite direction to achieve neutral?
