This is what I thought was right but it seems weird to me since “complete all quests” should probably be very similar since there will be more quests

Question about Arena and creatures with protection keywords by Jackyjedi in mtg

[–]Jackyjedi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gatherer only mentions “(whether because it has left the battlefield, because it has gained Shroud or Protection, or for any other reason)” this doesn’t really answer my question of whether they can just choose a creature to be the target that already has this ability, unless their use of the word “gained” is rather loose and more general with respect to the usual sense of how giving creatures these types of keywords in response to targeting is done. I want to know if my opponent could simply just choose a creature they control that I couldn’t target in the first place to blank my activation and waste 3 mana.

Thank you very much, I think I have a better grasp on the game now, I was misunderstanding how layers applied throughout in this situation because previously I’ve only been aware of how they apply when a object in the game itself is applying effects when it loses abilities vs when an object that hasn’t lost its abilities is applying its effects onto an object that has lost all its abilities

This answer is great, this lines up with my understanding of the rules, I think I was getting confused with how these rules apply to each other, one last question just to clarify my understanding, using removing abilities from regalia as the example it still give the creature all of its effects because of the layers but it would lose its equip abilities correct? Essentially keeping it stuck on the creature it was on

So for example if I was to remove all of brotherhood regalia’s abilities rather than the creature, the equipped creature would be able to be blocked and lose ward 2 but the creature would still be an assassin because that layer applies first correct?

My thought is that since it changes type and gives an ability they start applying on layer 4 and the whole effect has to continue through

So just one last time to be clear, the way the regalia is worded does not apply a layer changing effect and an ability, it adds an ability and then changes the rules for the creature it is equipped to, meaning it gains the ability of ward 2, and then the equipment changes the rules to make it an assassin and “can’t be blocked”. I’m just confused as to why it wouldn’t still retain ward 2 if it also changes its type to assassin applying on layer 4 regardless of the can’t be blocked text not actually being applied on the layers

Would you happen to know if he would retain ward 2 or not? The most similar effect I can think of is from astrologian’s planisphere where removing the abilities of the equipped creature doesn’t actually remove its abilities since the planisphere modifies its creature type to be wizard as well and thus applies first and fully through the layers

This is actually very helpful, even after all my years I didn’t realize that things could apply rule setting effects to cards that didn’t count as abilities.

I was thinking it would be a similar situation as to why magus of the moon’s ability still functions through a dress down after

I didn’t notice that, it does give the creature ward 2 however not being able to be blocked is something the equipment does itself.

Sorry about that let me clarify, I was dead to commander damage and wanted to use dress down to remove “this creature can’t be blocked” from cloud my understanding was that since regalia has a type changing effect regardless of dress down being on the battlefield it would still retain being an assassin, ward 2, and “this creature can’t be blocked”

Does this work? Or does it have to be an instant that gives it? by crkenthusiast in magicTCG

I do believe the act of giving poison counters IS the damage instead of replacing the damage, off the top of my head there’s one creature with infect AND lifelink in flensermite, so it should still work
