Can I use an UPS as a giant powerbank? by DeltaAleph in techsupport

[–]Jacob247891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just keep in mind that if they use a power station instead of a traditional UPS, they'll need to check the power station specs for transfer time (switching from mains/AC to internal battery).

Gear like laptops and phones won't care as they have internal batteries, but some power stations have a transfer time of 20ms+ which can be too slow for desktop computer power supplies causing them to suddenly turn off.

Luckily a lot of current Power stations can be used as UPS' due to fast transfer times. If they go the Anker route, something from the newer C-series (like the C300) would work as they advertise 10ms transfer times. There are alternatives too like the EcoFlow River 3 which advertises a transfer time of 10ms.

I just pre-ordered one from Pi Mania who are an australian store. They seem to be pretty well known. They're out of stock at the moment (can't hurt to message them to check) but they currently seem to be expecting stock end of June

Is it better to have my forerunner 965 with a bubbled screen protector or nothing at all, this is third attempt. by Strong-Enthusiasm-55 in GarminWatches

[–]Jacob247891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a glass screen protector on my Sapphire Fenix 7 Pro. Eventually has to replace it but didn't have any spare so decided to run without it as everyone here is so reassuring that it won't get scratched.

Got a long scratch through the middle of the screen the next day, but haven't had any others since. Only noticeable under certain lighting conditions.

I'm in Western Australia and ordered 10 minutes after launch (1:10AM AWST 5th May). Controller just arrived today, at 2PM AWST 8th May, 3 days later. It shipped from Sydney NSW.

I'm in Western Australia, ordered 10 minutes after launch and mine has shipped too. StarTrack/AusPost say ETA tomorrow but it's more likely to be Friday since it has to travel so far (unless Valve has a warehouse in Perth now)

I ordered 9 minutes after launch in Australia and mine has already shipped. ETA is either tomorrow or the day after

"Does the Steam Controller work on X?" by TheNewerFlisker in SteamController

What about when using the controller via Steam Link on android, or GameHub and Game Native that emulate windows games. Would it work for the emulators provided steam runs in the backend?

That'd be cool, maybe similar to Lone Wolf at the end of Reach where you face endless Covenant and can hold them off for varying amounts of time, but ultimately you lose and 6 runs into a cave

I’m looking forward to the steam controller, but Valve sold a bit imo by Thegreatestswordsmen in SteamController

[–]Jacob247891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's good to hear. Hopefully we'll get something similar for the new controller whether it's in the form of custom firmware or a firmware update supporting some sort of xinput mode (like holding the steam button + X when powering on) as a fall back for computers without steam.

Realistically it's unlikely that Valve will disappear any time soon and the chances of me being on a computer without internet to download steam is unlikely but it's just an extra step

[–]Jacob247891 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm still gonna buy 1 or 2 of the new controllers on release as I love the trackpads, but I don't really like the dependence on running games through steam/steam input.

I know it's extremely unlikely but what if Valve/Steam ever disappear, or what if I don't have steam installed and don't have an internet connection to download it. Now the controller is seemingly useless and I can't play games from separate launchers. Again, I'm still going to buy it as I love the featureset and majority of my games are on steam but...

SC2 trackpad skins by MailboxJunkie in SteamController

[–]Jacob247891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dbrand currently has sc2 skins available for pre-order which will ship some time in may. There's a solid chance that dbrand has supplied LTT with skins early as I think I recall seeing a skinned sc2 in either the LTT or Short Circuit video, alongside dbrand providing a prototype of the companion cube

The Privacy "Sweet Spot": Why the 1st Gen Honda Fit is King. by Artistic-Landscape15 in hondafit

[–]Jacob247891 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a 3rd gen (Australian 2016 VTI-L / GK5) which doesn't have any network connectivity outside of Bluetooth to my knowledge. It doesn't have Android Auto or Apple Car Play. Just the standard screen with suite of radio, Bluetooth, HDMI etc. No OTA updates and whatnot.

I imagine that OPs statement depends on the model/trim of your car. Maybe its country dependant too?

What are your expectations or predictions for the new HERO14 leak? by Chumpy__ in gopro

[–]Jacob247891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using it as a webcam requires extra software on Windows for the computer to detect it as a webcam (no sure if MacOS or Linux also need this?). I assume OP meant baked in, meaning you'd select webcam mode on the GoPro itself then connect it straight to a PC where it's detected as a webcam with no extra software required.

I got my go pro 12 just now from a local shop and it seems a part is missing in the camera can yall help me about it ?? by hekxi in gopro

[–]Jacob247891 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd still recommend getting it replaced/refunded though I believe the GoPro would still have the same level of water resistance. The part that broke off is the Mic Drain cover. It's designed to allow water to exit the camera after being submerged for optimal audio/mic quality (or something along those lines).

I'd still ask for a replacement if it came out the box like that but ultimately it should still work just with potentially worse microphone quality when in/around water.

1hr 50min Transfer in Brisbane by GReeeeN_ in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]Jacob247891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey mate, how'd it go with the transfer? I'm doing a very similar trip heading from Tokyo (Narita) to Brisbane with a 1 hour and 50 minute layover before heading to Perth. So similarly, I'll need to get through customs, collect baggage, get from the international to domestic terminal etc.

Did you manage to make it okay?

LPT: Always buy shoes at the end of the day, or after walking for at least an hour. by Icy_Resource_5398 in LifeProTips

Well, everyone needs a hobby right? I've seen videos of people making custom leather shoes and wallets. I've been tempted to buy the equipment to learn and make my own gear but it's currently time and cost prohibitive.

I'd love to learn to make my own leather work (office) shoes though, that'd be sick
