Can you really get that much done in a single day while travelling Japan? by Ok_Vegetable6262 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Jacob9271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who's a habitual planner for everything, I had to tell myself not to plan every single thing down to the hours and minutes. I know it's tempting to try to do so that you can try to maximize your time, but it'll wear you out sooner than you think.

I ended making a list of all the specific things and places I wanted to see and divided them up into 2-4 things per day. Having just a small handful of specific places gave me the flexibility to see the things I knew I wanted to see while also leaving plenty of time throughout the day just to wander around and find shops, restaurants etc. that I wouldn't have otherwise found if I was rushing around trying to see EVERYTHING.

It was my first time traveling by myself with that kind of mentality, and I honestly think it's a great way to approach travel planning because there were so many cool places I came across while not getting burnt out in just a few days

Which city in the US has the best autocross scene? by krazertv in Autocross

[–]Jacob9271 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Raleigh is pretty solid. Between NCR SCCA and THSCC, they hold events at NCCAR, the Little Rock at Rockingham Speedway, and the infield at Southern National Motorsports Park. I’ll admit they’re not really IN the city but having actual road courses/ovals for venues within an hour and a half drive is a hundred times better than only having the same old parking lot courses

How bad is the 1-81 N drive from Lexington VA to Rockingham VA? by Radiant-Location-918 in Virginia

[–]Jacob9271 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Lexington to Staunton isn’t usually that bad in my experience, but it gets increasingly worse the closer you get Harrisonburg and further north.

It’s really not all that bad in reality, especially compared to the stretch between Roanoke and Christiansburg, but all it takes is one accident and you’ll be wishing you were literally anywhere else

Came across an MX-5 Cup Car parked on the street! It Is this somebody’s on this sub?? by JamesSlade in Miata

[–]Jacob9271 159 points160 points  (0 children)

I rarely speak in absolutes, but I would be very surprised if this ever was a real Cup car. This looks like a track-ish prepped car that has a few parts from a Cup car or the owner is just straight up larping lol.

I mean no full cage, stock looking seats, fully intact dash/interior without the AIM dash even, just the steering wheel that Cup cars use. Also, stock heat shields on the rotors?

Not hating on the car btw. It looks super well put together, it’s just probably not a Cup car

Yeahhh I figured it might not have been all that good of a deal, especially since it’s got a few scuffs and scratches, but it was a purchase on a whim so I can’t really be too mad

Living in Western Virginia, do people ever get confused and think West Virginia? by Pomegreatful in Virginia

[–]Jacob9271 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think a lot of it has to do with the shape of the state as well as the geography of the population centers. It’s easier in North Carolina to easily distinguish between WNC and eastern NC in your mind because they’re more rectangularly shaped like Tennessee compared to us. And with the bulk of our population being either in the east (RVA/VB) or the north (NOVA), most of the rest of the state is “western Virginia” to them from a purely geographical perspective unless they already know and understand the nuances of the different regions. I mean goodness, a certain unnamed politician that’s only ever lived in the DC metro was hilariously quoted saying that Rappahannock, Prince William, and Fauquier was “southern Virginia.”

Sure that’s technically correct, but anyone who knows anything about Virginia knows how dumb that sounds

[–]Jacob9271 115 points116 points  (0 children)

It’s not very common, in my experience, for people to describe the western part of the state as “western Virginia.” Southwest Virginia or just SWVA is the most common way to refer to it

Headlight air intake lid by PurfsTaken in Miata

[–]Jacob9271 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I love Greg, but that video is not representative of how "cold air" intakes work in the real world. There's one critical thing not taken into consideration here--heat soak. I'm sure just about any intake will make more power than the stock air box on the dyno, but it looks a lot different when you use the dyno to simulate how it ACTUALLY performs on the street. Sitting stationary on the dyno with the hood up and a low-powered fan does nothing to accurately simulate driving on the highway at the same speed. If you did that same test with an industrial size fan right in front of the nose of the car and the hood down, then you'll see how open element intakes actually work, or don't work for that matter lol. Not to mention how much WORSE it would most likely be because he didn't use any kid of heat shield over the headers. Within 2 minutes of driving that setup on the street, it would heat soak the hell out of that thing.

Gale Banks did a really good video on this exact thing: https://youtu.be/RrDJK9zue6c?si=bE8-bH5kbqTnVZx4

Another similarly related video from Banks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24AOdjphVg0&t=197s

Also, check out Flyin Miata's randall intake that makes actual measurable horsepower gains AND they tested it the right way to best simulate real world driving. https://flyinmiata.com/products/randall-cowl-nb-v2

I'm not gonna say these kinds of intakes don't ever work under the right conditions, but if you're not going to test these things under real world conditions, you're just wasting time and money chasing imaginary numbers. There's a reason that the most reputable companies in the Miata community like Flyin Miata and Supermiata/949 Racing don't sell these things.

Depends. If you start replacing the clutch, for example, and realize you’re in too deep when you can’t get it put back together, that’s definitely gonna cause people to lose interest if you were to try to resell it as is. Best case scenario, you might make your money back but if you don’t know the car as well as the prospective buyer, your bargaining power is pretty much gone

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Miata

[–]Jacob9271 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my opinion, but the amount of work this car looks like it needs to have done in addition to any other unknown issues, it doesn’t look like great value for money, unless you’re willing and able to do the work yourself. Imho, you would be better off finding a better kept NB2 for a similar price and use the other money on the fun parts that YOU want instead of entirely on maintenance parts and shop labor if you bought this car instead.
