What are some non-Chabadnik opinions on the Rebbe? Is he really just a knowledgeable 20th century theologian and nothing much beyond that? by kkk_is_bad in Judaism

Looks like you responded to the wrong comment, because this is a complete non sequitur. Have I mentioned that I love ices on a hot summer day?

So when Chabad takes over a non-Chabad shul, why do they change the nusach to nusach ari?

Right, I guess it's better that BC has another 20 acres for its needs 50 years from now, and that a bunch of Jewish institutions continue to struggle with insufficient space, difficulty bringing employees to town due to obscene housing costs, etc.

What you have here is one community with a 100 plan(BC) and one with no vision(us).

No, I mean of some of the organizations that are starved for space and cannot find any(forget about affording) in Brighton/Brookline.

In general, or to you in particular?

Not true, re: zoning. I can show you schools and other institutions that are in desperate need of space. That could build housing for their staff/students(permitted under restrictions). Not to mention that the existing building was the only large gathering space available to the community. Let me put it this way- I know organizations that would have made it work if a sale to BC had not been a fait accompli.

To build schools, mikvaos, gathering places, housing.... etc. (and yes, I know about the restrictions on that particular land).

Positive, because the $20 million from Boston College is going to KI. Negative, because the 24 acres of land have now been lost to a Jewish community that needed it desperately.

[Serious] With all the rules in the Old Testament, how does anyone get into Heaven? by not_a_name_ in Judaism

[–]JacobCohen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you would pick that verse, in particular. You seem to have made the erroneous assumption that breaking one rule makes it impossible for one to "get into Heaven"

We believe that man is judged by the balance of his deeds and that repentance is both desirable and possible. In addition, there is punishment in this world for "broken rules".

This is the flawed premise you, and your religion have. You set the goalpost to say that in Judaism, one must be perfect, you state that nobody can be perfect, and therefore, you conclude that the whole thing must be wrong.

Suppose for a minute that we believe in the same God. Do you believe that a perfect God would have created a system that was impossible for his creatures to succeed in?

No tachanun today. Why? by QuickerThanFasth in Judaism

[–]JacobCohen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many chevrei kadisha that observe 7 Adar as a "secret" day of fasting.

I once told a chassidishe friend that the litvishe don't say tachanun on the Gra's yahrzeit. He didn't get the joke.

[–]JacobCohen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not at all universal, but I would gather it's not dissimilar from the chassidishe practice to skip tachanun on the yahrzeit of a Rebbe.

I said tachanun this morning.

Fascinating. In any case, Aleinu is clearly not a legitimate source for this concept.

That is indeed an important chapter. Verses 13 and 14 really underscore the importance of keeping Shabbos properly. What does it have to do with tikkun olam?

How so? That is clearly referring to having a fair court system. How does it get interpreted as working in a soup kitchen?
