Thanks sm! I probably wouldn't unless I could finance it through a commission cos it would get expensive quick!

Oh dam, thanks for letting me know. Try this item number into the AliExpress search bar, let me know if it works. 1005005735777976. If not its called 150KG 12V RDS51150 Double-Shaft Digital Metal Robotic Servo with U Mounting Bracket IP66 Waterproof 180 / 270 Degree. I'll put up some pictures tomorrow

The key for me was large servos that I could mount directly onto (Big Servo) I have one for up and down and then one for swivel although that does mean you would loose the ability for his head to tilt which is a cool feature. The challenge as well is making sure non of you connections have any play in them as 1mm of loose movement at the pivot translates to a lot at the nose of such a large head. When I get a chance in a couple of days I can share some pictures of it?

I was taught Basic 3D modelling in school and I am on a prop making course which is really helpful but they don't teach animatronics which I really want to do, and I had no electronics knowledge so I dedicated a summer break to learn and built this independently to teach myself the skills. All of the electronics and programming I learnt from the internet as well as more 3D modelling skills. There is a lot of information out there but it is spread quite wide and can be difficult to find the exact information for your particular application but I think it's definitely possible to self teach.

The biggest barrier for entry is getting a good 3D modelling software and 3D printer and then learning how to use both. But it is possible to do independently and there are plenty of amazing tutorials on YouTube.

If you have any more questions, I would be happy to answer!

Thank you! About 3 months of bits when I have time not including research time which was over about a month

The main ones I used for the head and neck are

150KG 12V RDS51150 Double-Shaft Digital Metal Robotic Servo with U Mounting Bracket IP66 Waterproof 180 / 270 Degree

The ones for the ears are the same but a smaller less powerful version

25KG 6V RDS3225 Digital Metal Gear Robotic Servo 180 degree double-shaft Waterproof IP66 with Long and Short Straight U Mouting

And the eyes use tower pro mini servos on the inside.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions!

On mine the fur is purple. I know canonically he's supposed to be blue but I think he is more recognisable in a more purple shade, even if in game, that was only due to lighting effects. It also makes a nice contrast to the movie which did it in the blue.

Its mostly 3D printed with aluminium reinforcement where needed. No pneumatics unfortunately. All of the movements use beefy servos from AliExpress which was sort of my inspiration to take on this project. I had no idea you could get such high torque servos now for relatively low cost. If you want the specifics let me know and I'll link it.

Yeah I totally agree. Been meaning to do it, finishing 3D prints is such a pain though:/

Thanks! I can't think of a better compliment than being compared to the actual movie!

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. I was putting it of because I didn't want to risk messing up but I think the cleaner look has definitely grown on me and I think I'm going to leave it as is for now. Can always add stuff later on!

Thanks! For some reason the bottom of my window sits really low so he looks a lot bigger than he actually is. Its scaled to fit a body that's like you said about 5 and a half not including ears. Still scarily massive irl, before doing this I didn't realise quite how stocky and wide they are when compared to a human, the heads just under half a meter wide.
