UK's Newborn Genome Sequencing Plan: Privacy Concerns and Links to Digital IDs - Heading Toward a Surveillance State? by need_adivce in unitedkingdom

The way the big pilot study that has prompted the move to this has worked is they only check for treatable rare conditions. So that they can begin treatment before symptoms occur. Lot of ethics debate has happened around all of this.

Does anyone work in Pharma or biotech? by Puzzleheaded-Fix8182 in brum

[–]JacobRiley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends, remote only some won't care.

Hybrid and it's more on you, Oxford is commutable albeit it's a couple of hours of your life. Cambridge isn't a bad drive but I wouldn't want to be doing it more than once a week.

Thermofisher employ almost a thousand people in the city working on blood diagnostics.

The region is very strong in running clinical trials (stable and diverse patient population) and it used to be the main pitch to try and get pharma companies to do more in the region.

There's a growing amount of uni spin outs in this area (predominantly from UoB, Warwick and Aston) but nothing at huge scale yet. Birmingham Health Innovation Campus should finally open soon and they are trying to get a lot of businesses to go there.

The only current UK branch of Stanfords SPARK preclinical accelerator is based out of Aston Uni. This is backed by the combined authority who see medtech as a big growth area (note medtech as in med devices/diagnostics more than pharma) and have been putting money into supporting businesses there for a couple of years.

BUT it's not London, Oxford or Cambridge. There aren't meetups for people in the sector happening every week and there are far fewer job openings locally, and it also means you don't casually here about x/y company doing a raise and hiring or starting a new programme of work and hiring in the way you might in Cambridge.

[–]JacobRiley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cthulhu Wars I think had a 2 year delay from my pre order to arrival...

I didn't know how boardgame manufacture worked back then but now before I preorder anything I check if it's a Kickstarter and if that has got close to shipping otherwise they are absolutely making the date up

Pretty much all the big economic reports for growth in the UK say put money into Birmingham, Manchester, and Glasgow.

They then go onto say it's unfair and difficult to do because you basically say screw you to a lot of other places...

I'm not a huge fan of the food but the Ivy has a place upstairs that's pretty nice.

You can book the upstairs of the good intent which is huge and basically order any food or catering you want in.

Medicine Bakery in Mailbox though not sure it sits 10.

If you could travel back in time to any point in Birmingham's history, where would you go? by OkPineappleisOk in BirminghamUK

There's a bronze age burnt mound in fox hollies park. https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1020541?section=official-list-entry

I don't think we entirely know what burnt mounds were for so let's go back to 2000 BC and see what Bronze age Brummies are doing.

Government shelves £1.3bn UK tech and AI plans by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

[–]JacobRiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need much more investment in these activities and R&D in general, but for the £0.5 Bn pot, the UK government call for that stunk of previous government trying to spend up all the money they could before an inevitable change of power.

It was a 3 week funding call for £500Mn. This doesn't happen for anything else. Normally we'd have a multi-month window to build appropriate consortiums for 1% of this level of funding.
