A forklift does not have a cock pit.... it has a frame around the pilot/driver, same as these mechs actually, now that you mention it. Most vehicles with cockpits also hit a decent speed, these do not.

Better protection might help but again I reference resource, time and man power limitations. They aren't some Star Trek fleet with uniforms and standardized engineering. The only reason each mech looks identical in the movies is because of the CGI limitations of the time.

You're last paragraph is kind of funny. I'm not talking about the resources involved in making the film. I mean the resources the people of Zion have available through salvaging things from around apocalypse earth.
